BBC America's Orphan Black - editing conflicts question

dpratt wrote 9 years ago: 1

So Orphan Black airs at the same time on both BBC America and Space depending on whether or not you're in Canada. This has caused an editing conflict and currently it's locked to Space. Orphan Black is filmed in Canada so maybe this is more appropriate, however I believe it's still considered an American series since it wouldn't exist without BBC America. So unless I am incorrect about that I am of the opinion that it should be BBC America and not Space.

How are issues like this usually resolved? I don't see any info about it in the FAQs.

The show is a Canadian series, BBC America is just its American broadcaster.

"How are issues like this usually resolved?" By doing what you're doing now; a decision is made after discussion (except anime, where it's so common that often the biggest network from the choices is used if there's no change throughout the broadcast)

Does it air at the same time on both networks for all the episodes, or just a few of them?

Personally, if all the episodes are like that, I think it should stay as "BBC America" which is what the previous seasons are currently set to; having it now at space gives the impression that BBC America is no longer premiering it first, which wouldn't be true.

From what I remember from previous chats, Orphan Black premieres on Space at first, so in this case it would be correct. I highly doubt they air at the same hour, otherwise it was never changed. Juan probably knows more.

This was discussed sometime ago, back then I think the show aired earlier in Canada.

Orphan Black premiered on both networks on the same evening. Canada is ahead of America by one and a half hours timezone-wise which means they usually premiere shows an hour before we do. However that doesn't automatically make Canada's Space the best choice for the index. Most people watch it on BBC America. BBC also distributes the show.

we can't make exceptions every time for just a number of shows. Our policy clearly states that we are using the dates and airing times of the network it premieres on. If space airs it 90 minutes before bbc, we stick to space. We don't use networks based on the number of views.

Got it.

BBC also distributes the show though, and you'd think that would make a difference, but I guess not.

That's like if a Nickelodeon show aired on some random kids channel in Brazil the same day and since they're ahead of us you decided to use the Brazilian channel even though it's clearly a Nick show. See what I mean?

I guess one saving grace to this is that Orphan Black is at least filmed in Canada. So in that respect I don't mind so much the Canadian flag next to it.

There are a lot more Canadian shows than you might realize. Sometimes it is good when a show can retain its Canadian ownership for legitimate reason without it automatically being assigned to USA. And if you think it should be assigned to USA because more people watch it there, (bigger is better) Do a little research on Bell Media, the owner of the Canadian "Space" Channel. You have no idea how big they really are, so if you want to argue "bigger is better", Canada is the one in this one also.

I'm totally fine with Canada's Space being Orphan Black's network in this index. I take back what I said about most people watching it on BBC America. Though that is probably true, what matters is the network that first commissioned the show, which is Space. Since BBC America gets more press, I made the mistake of believing that BBC America was the one to commission Orphan Black. But now I admit my mistake. And I apologize. :)
