I'm aformer LocateTV user and TV maze is (for me) aptly named a real maze. I have no idea how to do anything (Foyle's War showed up om my followed shows but I've no idea how it did). So, first things first, how can I add a show to my follwed list and how am I alerted to its being on?

Underneath every show logo is a green box with a white heart in it. Click that heart and it'll turn yellow.
You are now following that particular show.
Click on your calendar tab and set it to show only the shows you are following from the drop down box near the top right.
You will now only see on your calendar shows you are following and when they are next on, assuming they are currently airing.
I love the Calendar it is freaking awesome!
