Text editor issues

Gadfly wrote 10 years ago: 1

I'm not sure if it's a bug or deliberate. But...

When I backspace-delete (Ctrl-Back) to delete the last word I typed, it goes to the end of the preceding word. With no space.

That's... kind of unusual. Typically on every site, and every application that I use (Word, Powerpoint, Wordpad, Notebook, etc.), when you hit Ctrl-Back, it delete the word and goes to the end of the preceding word. And adds a space. So when you start typing, the word you type is spaced normally.

As-is, when you retype, the word you type is at the end of the preceding word with no space inbetween them. So you end up with "inbetweenthem" rather than "inbetween them." If you hold off on typing, it looks like the cursor is one space to the end of the preceding word... but when you start typing, it puts it right up against that word with no space.

It happens in Summaries, in Recaps, in forum posts...

If that's deliberate, no problem. It's survivable. But it's very awkward when you're typing large amounts of text and are accustomed to the "normal" way that Ctrl-Back works.

I'm using Firefox, most current PC version.

Hope that makes sense. Thanks!

Hah. Our text editor is an existing component that wasn't written by us - I didn't even know it had this ctrl-backspace functionality :-)

But strangely enough, for me it works as you describe: deleting the entire previous word and leaving a space. I'm currently using Firefox as well.

I'll leave this open and we can check it out again after we've upgraded the text editor component.

I created a text in Notepad using Tabs for spacing, excluding hyperlinks.

Copied it all in the textfield here and Voila, the spacing was gone and hyperlinks were inserted seemingly at random.

Besides that there is no predicting how many empty lines between sentences will appear.

So, put the upgrade of this editor on the frontburner please :D

PS: I know that with the influx of new users, who all have their wishes for changes and adaptations, you guys may get swamped so I'll just wait and see, and hope for the best. You'll get to it when you can.

Whatever it was, it looks like it's now fixed. Thanks!

That's particularly strange; there haven't been any updates to the editor since yesterday :-)

Ghosts in the server room. Let's hope they stay away.

Actually, I was wrong. The summaries are okay. But the forums are still doing the same thing. So it was... half fixed. Weird.

I find in this textbox with Microsoft Edge when writing text, if you add a new line, the next letter starts in front of the cursor, and the rest trail in behind it, causing words to have its first letter at the end.

Its a bit painful, but can be lived with, for now. It's the only site I've experienced it on, that I know of.

I've noticed an odd line-breaking problem as well, if you delete a large block of text and then try to type where it was. It's like it "remembers" the line breaks that you had before and inserts them into the new text. Which causes text to break to a new paragraph in the middle of a paragraph, a sentence, a word. The break is there no matter how much you try to type and retype.

Strange stuff. I'll try upgrading the editor this weekend, and if it looks OK to me you guys can test and tell me if it's an improvement.

david wrote 10 years ago: 1

I just updated the editor to the latest version. Those who had problems with it, can you try it now and let me know if anything improved?

Gadfly wrote 10 years ago: 1

It seems to be backspace/deleting in the way I've seen in other applications, at least on this page. And on episode summaries. So looks good to me. Thanks!

If I spot any further discrepancy, I'll let you know.

Gadfly wrote 10 years ago: 1

Nope. It works for me in here. But in, say, the Crew forum, it does the same thing I reported originally. Weird.

porshipman wrote 10 years ago: 1

It's still wonky (spaces etc.) in the edit field wherever I edit.

david wrote 10 years ago: 1

I've made some more tweaks. Please let me know your experiences as of today.

Gadfly wrote 10 years ago: 1

So far so good at least as far as posting to your response here.

Gadfly wrote 10 years ago: 1

It seems to be okay when making a new forum post. But not when editing an existing one.

I think the same applies to summaries. New one, it works. Editing old ones, no.

I did not have any problems with the text editor.

Gadfly wrote 10 years ago: 1

While I hate to bring it up, this problem persists erratically. I see it in summaries, and in recaps, as well as in forums.

What may be a related issue is that sometimes when you add and put in words, it forces hard line breaks. You can't backspace and delete them. Well, you can, but as soon as you add the word, it does the same thing again. This leads to posts that have a paragraph with scrunched-u-p lines.

There seems to be something going on in the text editor besides just text and HTML code for links, bold, and italics.

I have to agree, this text editor is pretty awkward :)

Yeah, I encounter them very rarely myself, but I've seen it happen that the editor gets in a messed up state for a certain post/etc. I've spent countless hours trying to fix it, but I fear we need to switch to a different editor instead. That's not a minor change so it might take a while.
