I’ve been a contributing member for over a year and got a warning about being a new member and needing to be verified. I’ve only contributed twice in the last 2 days and the error happened on the 2nd contribution. Is this done at random and it was just my lucky time?

I don't know the definite answer, but an interm guess is you finally hit a number of edits that require TPTB to take a quick look at you and your edits to make sure everything is hunky-dory. It's not you personally, everyone of us hit a number of those predetermined check points and waited (from a few minutes to a few hours) to be unblocked to carry on.
Indeed, some edits from 2015 & 2016 that didn't put them past the limit. Message has been sent.
Yep, it's not related at all to your account age, merely to the number of edits.
