Louis Theroux Documentaries

RaveDave wrote 7 years ago: 1

What is the policy regarding the Louis Theroux documentaries? Currently we have the main Louis Theroux listing which has the vast majority of his documentaries listed, we have a separate listing for his Dark States mini series, even though it is listed under the main Louis Theroux listing on the BBC official site, he has a new 3 part mini series entitled Altered States starting tonight that had got its own listing but that has now been marked for deletion and it is now being included under the main Louis Theroux listing on here.

Is the policy that all Louis Theroux documentaries are listed under the main Louis Theroux listing unless they have their own BBC site? if thats the case then the Dark States listing seems to be incorrect, or is it that all Louis Theroux mini series/multiple part documentaries have their own listings?

This show shouldn't be different from any other show we list. The policy is the same for everything.

How BBC have it on their website is no business of ours, considering that many of the two- or three-parters were announced as separate mini-series in the press releases (including the latest Louis Theroux's Altered States). Apart from multi-part episodes, the rest just seems as a bunch of one-off films, which doesn't really fit in TVmaze policy.

And having a single season that runs for 15 years is awkward.

Even BBC themselves doesn't really consider this website entry a show, or a series, but rather a box set (whatever that means) https://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/latestnews/2018/theroux-dooley

Relevant press releases:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/latestnews/2018/louis-theroux-altered-states "Louis Theroux will return to BBC Two later this year with a new series..."
https://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/latestnews/2018/louis-theroux-altered-states-qanda "Louis Theroux discusses his new BBC Two series Altered States"

https://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/proginfo/2012/24/louis-theroux-twilight-of-the-porn-stars "Episode 1/1"

https://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/proginfo/2012/16/Louis-Theroux-Autism "Episode 1/2"
https://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/proginfo/2012/17/Louis-Theroux-Dementia "Epsiode 2/2"

https://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/proginfo/2017/41/louis-theroux "Episode 1/3"
https://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/proginfo/2017/42/louis-theroux "Episode 2/3"
https://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/proginfo/2017/43/louis-theroux-dark-states "Episode 3/3"

https://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/proginfo/2015/12/louis-theroux "Episode 1/2"
https://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/proginfo/2015/13/louis-theroux-by-reason-of-insanity "Episode 2/2"

My proposal would be to separate all multi-parters to their own separate entries (according to press releases), and leave the rest as a generic anthology series "Louis Theroux", using year-based numbering for it's episodes. Starting with un-deleting https://www.tvmaze.com/shows/38940/louis-therouxs-altered-states

Indeed the current setup can never be valid. If these episodes would truly belong to the same show, it should have season-based numbering. ("However, some shows don't have any notion of season numbers. In such a case, the premiere year of the episode should be used as season number.")

(I don't know whether this should be a single show or multiple shows without investigating further)

Undeleted it :)

Does it mean that we go the "separate entries" way?

I'm not even entirely sure if this Louis Theroux is even a valid series. I created it prior to real policies, but I think we could schedule this show https://www.tvmaze.com/shows/7666/louis-theroux for deletion, right? It's not a real series, so does everyone agree with it?

What rule would it violate?

It basically isn't really a series. They are just standalone documentaries of Louis Theroux, which are bundled by BBC on one page.... They are not even an annual event.

The same could be said about basically any other documentary series.

In this case, they are all made by, and starring, the same person.

Haven't dug into how BBC lists it all, but I've watched plenty of episodes and I would definitely say that it's a proper series.

Our definition of a TV show is something that premiered on television and has at least two episodes/parts in a serial format, i.e. the two episodes should correlate to each other, air on the same network, and have an overlap in plot/cast/crew.

The different episodes/parts aired on the same network, have an overlap in cast (Louis Theroux himself), and have an overlap in plot: all episodes are clearly the same kind of format with him visiting an odd group of people and interviewing them in his unique style.

Definitely not an overlap in plot ;p. Anyhow It was just a question :)

Guys, what about the original question?

MTQueenie wrote 7 years ago: 1

I would say add it as one show but list the seasons either by year or better by each multi-parter.

What about the other Theroux's series which we have as a separate entries (however, some of them are also "bundled" on BBC website)?

https://www.tvmaze.com/shows/35852/when-louis-met (bundled)

https://www.tvmaze.com/shows/35127/dark-states (bundled)

https://www.tvmaze.com/shows/6036/louis-therouxs-la-stories

I haven't watched this show so just going by the BBC website i would say the episodes listed on this page https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b05qzmgd/episodes/guide is one show that should be split into seasons of some sort, if there are other multi-parters that have their own page on bbc then that's a separate show.

You have the same amount of knowledge as the most of us, myself included, all the data you need is at the BBC media centre website. You could as well participate in the decision making, there's not so many Head Contributors among us :p

Well the policy says, press release first, if not available,we go by the official episode list on the homepage.

The press releases are in my first post on this page. What could you make of them?

Considering that you've undeleted https://www.tvmaze.com/shows/38940/louis-therouxs-altered-states you probably in the favor of keeping them separate? Or not?
