Cosmos: Possible Worlds -- New Show or New Season?

enzo_matrix wrote 5 years ago: 1

TV Maze, along with many other sources, agree that Cosmos: Possible Worlds is a new (second) season to Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, but download sites are calling it season 1, as if it's a new show. This is causing a mismatch in searches, since the names do not match. Did something change, suddenly making this a new show, rather than a second season?

It's considered a new series within the Cosmos franchise, but also referred to as the third season. So, it could also be listed as Season 1 or Season 3.

Official stuff takes precedence over random websites.

I found your response to be terse and unclear. You can't get more official than the producer herself who made all 3 season (the link I provided), and NatGeo's own press releases (link to site which tnt provided) all referring to it as Season 3. I'm fine with whatever you do. I just love the show and thought I would provide helpful information.

From press release (see NatGeo link above):

COSMOS RETURNS!

SEASON 3 OF THE MOST CELEBRATED SCIENCE SHOW
ON THE PLANET TO PREMIERE MARCH 9, 2020,
ON NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC

To clarify, our data policy specifies which source to use when there is conflicting information;

"In some cases, there might be multiple sources that conflict with each other. When that happens, they should be considered in the following order:

1. Data shown on-screen during the episode's announcement, intro, or credits
2. Data in a press release or press kit
3. Data on the show's official website
4. Data in TV guides/TV listings/EPG's for the show's country
5. Statements by show crew in articles / interviews"

As the link that you posted is an interview (#5 in precedence order), the press listing (#2 in precedence order) is used. That simply refers to it as "newest season" but never "season three".

what are we discussing here?

I am a bit lost, I think this should be the new season and NOT a new series.

The discussion is due to the show being referred to as different seasons in various sites and locations. On the official National Geographic site, it's referred to as Season 3, while on this site it is Season 2 and other sites it's a new show as Season 1.

Officially, this is Season 3, as stated in the press release on NatGeo website (links already provided above).

Season 1 was back in 1980. Season 2 was in 2014. Season 3 is 2020.

You can read it yourself from the links posted by tnt and gazza911 above. From the show's front page, just click on Media Kit > Documents and then download the "COSMOS: POSSIBLE WORLDS ANNOUNCEMENT RELEASE" document.

We will use the 2014 show and add the 3rd season to it, so everyone should be happy :)
