BBC Three / BBC Iplayer

For all the UK watchers among us on TVmaze, could someone please enlighten me the difference between BBC Three (which is supposingly a web channel) and BBC Iplayer itself? It seems to me that you'll be re-directed to BBC Iplayer for all BBC Three series that were suppose to broadcast on BBC Three web.....

Is it really a different web channel or is it just an extra brand naming?

It seems to me that all series of them are re-directed to BBC Iplayer https://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcthree

I would say that for the newer shows, yeah its technically the same platform now as iPlayer itself..but if we're talking shows that aired pre-2016 it might become a grey area still. since it started life as an actual TV station and wasn't always online-only like it is now.

Before 2016 it was a network https://www.tvmaze.com/networks/49/bbc-three

Then it became a web channel https://www.tvmaze.com/webchannels/71/bbc-three. But they're delivering the content via iPlayer.

I'm merely talking about BBC Three as in the web channel... Not the actual tv channel it used to be

BBC Three situation is somehow similar to Funny or Die channel https://www.tvmaze.com/webchannels/36/funny-or-die, which have the videos actually hosted on YouTube.

Yes, I'm not entirely sure why we made a funny or die channel on TVmaze when it is pretty clear it runs on youtube. I'm more lenient towards using the site  that actually host them, though BBC III is a bit more tricky than the case you just submitted as BBC promotes it as a bbc three series yet runs on iplayer :p

Yeah, BBC Three is a bit odd. As you correctly say, all the content (Although advertised as BBC Three) streams via the iPlayer.

But, if you goto the iPlayer website, you can see very clearly in the channel list, BBC Three is a selectable channel to watch from the list.

There are also times on late night BBC One where they have a BBC Three takeover in which they show various BBC Three shows.

As for which network we should use on TV Maze, I would say keep BBC Three as a streaming network just so that the various shows made for it can be kept separate from other BBC shows that are occasionally released as boxsets on the iPlayer after the initial first episode airs on BBC One or BBC Two.
