I am looking for a few shows where significant specials are particularly well used.

Of the top of my head, there's Doctor Who.
Episodes that are important to the story will be classed as significant specials.
Doctor Who immediately came to mind for me as well. Call The Midwife and Downton Abbey too. I know there's more but I'm blanking.
There is also Sherlock and Battlestar Galactica.
Black Mirror also has an episode released as special between seasons 2 and 3 but I'm not sure it would count, since it is a anthology kind of show
