Ability to add shows to list of favorites

MAT13 wrote 3 years ago: 3

Perhaps if would be cool or interesting to be able to click on say "heart icon" (or some other representation) on some tv series main page and add that show to your (user's) list of favorites. This could be limited to 10 or so, so only 10 shows can be added to user's list of favorites. Having this unlimited could have users add hundreds of shows in their list of favorites, so it's better to have just like top 10 or top 25 or whatever the limit would be.

This list should also be unrelated to any "public/private" display of info on user page so any user could see other user's list of favorite shows (if they have it) on their user page.

Additional interesting info may include number of users that have the same show in their list of favorite shows.

Let's say for example I have these three shows in my list of favorites...

- Quantum Leap (7)
- Stargate SG-1 (24)
- Xena: Warrior Princess (0)

This can be displayed as a table instead of list with number in a second column for example.

In the above list "Quantum Leap" would be name of the show, and (7) would stand that 7 other users have this show in their list of favorites.

I think it would be nice, especially considering using recommandation.

But IMO 10 is too low, 25 is more interesting

Isn't this exactly what we already have in the form of following a show?

Following just marks shows someone is currently watching and "Following" group keeps them all in one place. Once the show is over or you finish watching it, there's nothing to follow. This has nothing to do with list of favorites.

I am following 300+ shows, but mainly because I'm watching them. Some because I want to know when they come out to check if they're worth watching, some simply so I don't forget that I want to acquire and watch them, and others because I am currently watching them.

"Following" is more like "To-do" list.

Check out tags. You could simply create a tag called "Favorite" :)

I think he was talking in the sense where it would be use further for recommandation. Tags can be used for pretty much anything

To be honest, I can't imagine implementing this. We already have following and tags, a third way to accomplish pretty much the same thing doesn't sound very productive.

But do you realise that following a show isn't necessarily tied to "currently watching" at all? Sure, the watchlist defaults to the shows that you're following, but you can also use tags for that (see https://www.tvmaze.com/blogs/1/organize-your-watchlist-and-calendar-with-tags), or even mark episodes as watched without following/tagging a show at all. Conversely, you can follow shows without ever marking episodes as watched, just to track them on your follows dashboard, or to have them displayed on your profile.

@david

No, my goal wasn't to use this for any sort of recommendation or whatever. This was just supposed to be like "top 10 shows" or "top 25 shows".

Sort of, having the list of your favorite shows and by clicking on other user's account you can see his/her favorite shows.

This can in turn be used on some main page to list top N shows that users have marked as favorite (ordered by number of users that have the show in favorites).
On the "Shows" page you can order shows by "Highest rating" but that is far from perfect and has shows with only 4 ratings and score 10 on top.

So rather than using score, some "top N shows" link could list N shows and instead of rating have number of users (or votes) that marked it as favorite.

This isn't something that is "useful" for this site. This feature would be more like... something interesting or fun fact. And probably easy to implement.
But if you guys don't find this interesting then nevermind.

My goal for this was simply to say, go to @david 's user page and see which shows are his top 10 or so, and possibly compare my list of favorite shows and see how many other users have those shows in their favorites. Using tags cannot achieve this and people usually don't do that just to make their own list of favorites, but if the list as such exists, they would probably populate it ;))

So, nevermind this proposition if it's not of particular interest to others.

Cheers!

It's best to improve functionality rather than add on other seperate stuff.

People don't use it much? Improve it so that they will.

One idea would be to allow you to set tags as public/display on profile.

That is indeed something that's on one of our (many) lists :-)
