Tagging should not currently be classed as a feature.

Tagging, in it's current format, is so ridiculously cumbersome as to be utterly useless. I can find only one page on which tags can be created from. Once created there is only one place they can be applied to a show from. Once applied the user has to drill back down through several pages to apply another tag... and on it goes.

What I'm saying is don't bother with tags until some things are repaired. For instance: users need to be able to tag any Followed show from any location! Users should be able to apply multiple tags to a show at once. Users should be able to create tags while applying them.

There may be, and probably are, other issues with tagging I have not noticed.

I'd be happy if I could tag a whole bunch of shows at one time instead of individually. I think I tagged one or two and then decided no worth. Also, unless I sit and tag everything, there is no way to sort excluding specific tags, so instead of tagging something to not show you have to tag everything else you DO want to show.

We know :)

We were actually in the process of improving the tag system, but we got sidetracked by the large amount of new users. It's on our radar, and on the pending features list as "Better show tag management".

I didn't pick up on that because I didn't have the patience to start tagging that many things. Good catch!

I looked for it the other day. I must have just missed it.

I completely agree. Users should be able to add a tag to any show (not only followed, since unfollowed shows stay tagged too) from the shows main page. For instance, a Tag button under the Follow button.

Tagging 127 shows was a pain in the ass :)

That's interesting as a new user, because without the tagging system the site wouldn't have all the functionality I need from a site like this. So the idea that tagging is going to get less cumbersome is great!

You have more patience than I have. I thought tagging a couple of shows was a pain in the ass.

Doesn't the new show status when you click on your username do what you want ?

Not at all. You cannot apply tags from there. Don't get me wrong, tags are great, I use them all the time in other things. But being able to apply them needs to be as easy as it is to follow a show. If I only followed a few shows it would not be so bad. But I follow over four hundred!

Actually, now that I think about it, I totally agree with tonyrulez on being able to tag ANY show, not just followed ones.

david wrote 10 years ago: 1

Yep, that will be the implementation!

FYI, on the backend, tagging and following are already completely independent. If you unfollow a show, all of your tags for it will be preserved.

To add another "nice to have", it'd be great to see what tags are attached to the shows on the watchlist page. I'm tagging stuff Hulu, Netflix, etc as a way to remind me where I'm watching which show, and it'd be good to have that appear on the watchlist page. I know I can just view a specific tag on my watchlist, but I'd like to view all shows/tags, and still see what each show is tagged with.

Thanks!

2 years later still the same tagging system? Is it so hard to add tagging through the show's page? We still need to follow the show and then go to a list and put tags on it... it's ridiculous.

So I feel like I'm just blowing smoke into the wind here. I'm starting to wonder if there are other TV sites that have a better system for users to categorise their shows. If nothing has changed on this HOT topic in two years... just sayin'!

To be fair, it's not like the site has been static for the last two years. Any number of improvements have been implemented. Looking at the pending features list, there are four other things with more votes than tagging, though I agree the tagging system needs updating too.

Hi Raven,

I understand that it can be frustrating when you make a proper request and afterwards it looks like nothing is being done about it.

Let me just say that Improving tags is pretty high on our to do list. There are things still in front of it. But we'll get to it at some point this year. Wireframes have been created and there is consensus on how it should be implemented. But it's not it's turn yet.

Thanks for your understanding and for letting us know how things look like for you atm. It's appreciated.

cheers,

Jan

After some life stuff there was a brief hiatus from 'tv'. I went to movies. Movies and only movies for while... a long while. In the meantime some more tv happened and I'm no longer caught up. It's good not being caught up, but I don't think it will take very long until I am again :(

Any way... I'm back baby! So... going t try t set aside some time for tagging and hopefully be able to clean up the watch list of (oh dear!) 767 followed shows.

Don't worry, it wasn't the tagging issue which kept me away. :)

Hi Raven,

Nice seeing you again.

I'm assuming your original opinions from 3 years and 1 year ago have changed after the updates made to the tagging system.
