Ratings Roundup for the Week of May 1, 2022

CBS had a busy week last week. The Equaliser was rewarded with a two-year renewal, which means it will likely also eventually earn a fifth season as well. (Shows that run four seasons are rarely ever cancelled if the episode count is high enough.) Magnum PI and Blue Bloods wrapped their seasons last week. Magnum picked up a couple hundred thousand viewers for its finale. Blue Bloods gained a ratings tenth and four hundred thousand viewers. Blue Bloods is already renewed for next season, Magnum should be renewed as well. Good Sam closed out its freshman season picking up a ratings tenth and one hundred thousand viewers. It won't be renewed, however. How We Roll lost several hundred thousand viewers after last week's back-to-back episodes. It couldn't afford the loss and is likely done.

ABC opened its summer fare last week with premieres for Holey Moley, The Chase, and freshman series Who Do You Believe. None of them opened particularly well, and it's possible Who Do You Believe could be quickly pulled with those abysmal premiere numbers. Big Sky returned after a month off, down two hundred thousand viewers. A Million Little Things managed to find one hundred thousand viewers last week. Its chances for renewal are still poor.

Young Rock held its audience numbers while Mr Mayor lost one hundred thousand viewers. It's still anyone's guess which, if any, of the Peacock's current stable of half-hour comedies will be renewed.

FOX premiered the third season of Duncanville last week. It remains the lowest-rated of the Sunday animation block and with that low opening, it's hard to see it getting a season four. Call Me Kat wrapped its second season last week. It suffered from schedule issues, and never really recovered, but it might squeak a season three. Its fate rests on if FOX is interested in more scripted programs or if the network will pivot to more 'reality' or competition shows to fill schedule time. 9-1-1 was even while 9-1-1: Lone Star lost a ratings tenth and three hundred thousand viewers. Both shows will be easy renewals for the network.

MacGyver liked the first 2 seasons. The rest were weak, in part of George Eads, but also I never understood the reason they decided to make Justin Hires's character a big part of the show. He was the biggest annoyance for me.

Oh gods, yes. Hines' character served zero purpose to the plot. Even when they tried to make him an agent, it still fell flat. that character never worked and instead of making him recurring (kind of like Jack or Penny Parker in the original series), they doubled down on trying to make him a central character.

I loved Lenkov's rebooted Hawaii Five-0. The man hit that series out of the park. Then came his new MacGyver. I gave that a chance until George Eads left, but the show never captured that same winning vibe as Five-0. Then he tried Magnum. I knew we were in trouble the second he cast Perdita Weeks as Higgins. It could have worked if he had never gone down the sexual tension road, but he did. So, yeah, while the ratings were strong enough for renewal (the issue was disagreements between CBS and the production company, not the actor's contracts or ratings numbers) I'm glad they put the show out of its misery.

If Lenkov decides to reboot something else from my childhood, maybe he should go back to an ensemble show to re-do. trying to reboot these one main character shows into ensembles just doesn't work.

Pretty much how I feel. Hawaii Five-0 hooked me from the first episode and held until the end.

I suffered through 2 seasons of Magnum PI, but the "love triangle" was too much for me.

CBS is about what I expected. Glad they finally killed off Magnum PI
I was quite surprised about how much I enjoyed The Equaliser will be interesting to see if it continues to be interesting.

I avoid The CW for the most part these days, but I gave a chance for Kung Fu out of boredom. The first season was okay, but the second season was a complete mess. Not surprised to see it renewed, but definitely the biggest disappointment.

Yep, I saw that a little while ago. No surprise at all. Expect renewal news to be fast and furious this week. :)
