Ratings Roundup for the Week of March 26, 2023

The CW had a couple of premieres last week. Riverdale opened its final season about where it ended last season. The Great American Joke-Off opened low. Normally, it likely wouldn't be long for the world, but NextStar has stated they want more 'reality' and/or 'competition' programs moving forward, so it may have a chance. All American: Homecoming wrapped its season last week. So far, there's no word on whether or not the spin-off will join its parent show next season. The Flash returned after a week off, down in ratings and viewers. Walker had steady ratings but lost one hundred thousand viewers. Gotham Knights gained one hundred thousand viewers last week.

ABC wrapped The Bachelor and Alaska Daily last week. It's a safe bet The Bachelor will be renewed. The same cannot be said for Alaska Daily. Chances are it has aired its last episode and won't be renewed. Will Trent continued to prove it may be worth keeping around. It had steady ratings and only lost one hundred thousand viewers last week. The Rookie: Feds was up, picking up several rating hundredths and six hundred thousand viewers. The Company You Keep was up one hundred thousand viewers, but its chances for renewal are slim.

CBS continued to feast on NCAA basketball with the Final Four games airing on Saturday night. The network announced Blue Bloods was renewed for a fourteenth season. Fans should expect some major cast changes to justify the cost of continuing the series. East New York was up half a million viewers, keeping its hopes for renewal alive. True Lies was steady but low. Things are not looking good for its chances of renewal.

NBC had a quiet week. The One Chicago shows and the various Law & Orders both ran new episodes last week, so it was a good chance to see how the two franchises stack up. There's no reason to think any of them will be cancelled. Night Court returned after a week off, down one hundred thousand viewers. Quantum Leap gained a few rating hundreths and three hundred thousand viewers. Lopez vs Lopez and Grand Crew continued to be steady but low.

FOX premiered the latest season of HouseBroken to abysmal numbers. Running the premiere episode after repeats of the rest of the Sunday animated line-up probably didn't help. Animal Control managed to pick up a few rating hundreths, however, it lost one hundred thousand viewers. Farmer Wants a Wife picked up one hundred thousand viewers. Call Me Kat returned after a week off, down two hundred thousand viewers.

I know that things do not look good for ABC's The Company You Keep and CBS's True Lies and chances for their renewal look slim, but I wouldn't rule them out just yet.

According to an ABC's report published today The Company You Keep series debut has gained another 4.8M viewers in 35 days of multiplatform viewing. That brings its total audience to 7.2M. That's quite a significant increase from its L+7 total, which hovered around 4M, meaning that new audiences are continuing to discover the series in its first month. The episode also soared 435% in the 18-49 demographic from a 0.29 to a 1.39, according to ABC. (Source: Deadline)

Yesterday, CBS parent company Paramount reported that the streaming average minute audience (AMA) for the premiere episode of True Lies ranks as CBS's third-largest premiere this season on both Paramount+ and CBS. Ahead of True Lies are only the premieres for the second season of Ghosts, which sits at No. 1 on the list of CBS's streaming debuts of the 2022-2023 season and has already been renewed, and freshman drama Fire Country which has also been renewed. Debuting on CBS March 1, the first season of True Lies is averaging 4.6 million total linear viewers across its first four weeks, based on the "most current" data stream from Nielsen, which includes a week's worth of delayed viewing where available. With two weeks of (mostly DVR) playback, the True Lies premiere episode has risen to 5.73 million viewers, up 77% from the episode's Live + Same Day audience. (Source: Variety)

That makes me wonder. Why did ABC and CBS decide to publicize this data if they have already decided that they are done with these two shows? I believe this is their way to support these two shows. They are trying to attract new audience and boost ratings.

All this may very well be smoke and mirrors or, most likely, wishful thinking on my part because I like these two shows. But I still keep my hopes up! 🤞

Yep, sorry to say. that's PR hype.

As I mentioned a week or two ago, networks make their decisions on the C3s (commercial 3-Day). All those 30-Day and streaming numbers are hype to keep you watching an underperforming show so they get paid. The network likely made its decision weeks ago on whether or not to renew.
