TVmaze as an app on your phone (pwa)

418397.jpg

Hello fellow TVmazers,

Over the years we've gotten the question 'do you have an app?' quite a few times.
And today we can say 'YES. Well kind of...'

We've created a 'progressive web app'.
'A progressive what?' you might be asking yourself.

So... What is a PWA?

'Progressive Web Apps are web applications that load like regular web pages or websites but can offer the user functionality such as working offline, push notifications, and device hardware access traditionally available only to native mobile applications'
source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_Web_Apps

PWAs aren’t yet mainstream. But with the range of benefits they provide, you’ll hear about them a lot more in the future.

Our first step has been to make TVmaze available just like your typical app. Currently we're not taking advantage of features such as push notifications.
We had some internal discussions on what features we'd like to provide but ultimately we decided to prioritize based on community feedback.

How do I get a PWA on my phone or tablet?

PWAs are not deployed to the Google Play Store or App Store. If you go to your browser menu, you'll generally see an 'Add to Homescreen' option.

After clicking on it, you'll see the TVmaze icon on your homescreen.

That's it! Just click on the icon and track your shows.

As always, should you have any questions or suggestions, don't hesitate to post them. We'd love to hear your thoughts.

cheers,

Jan & David

I just found this conversation and was able to successfully get it installed on my Android phone. Any update on being able to choose your home page?

Still no dedicated mobile apps? Ridiculous. I have no interest in PWAs. I have my mobile browser set to automatically clear all its data, including cookies, whenever it's closed. This is to help me maintain a shred of privacy. No, I can't add exceptions. No, even if I could, it still would not be a good solution.

Hey, just a thought but could this maybe be added to features or at least somewhere more visible on site. I got a new phone and it took me 20 min to find it. New users will have no idea it even exists. And I think it's quite a handy thing to have. And just a note for iphone users to make it more clear ob how to add: open tvmaze in safari. then at bottom of browser screen, select the share option, then scroll through til you see add to home page. click and it's done

Kind of an odd menu choice indeed, but great to hear that it's working! :)

"Share Menu" was the key phrase. That's where it was in IOS Safari. Thanks, David.

Unfortunately I don't have an iPhone to test with. On your phone, is there no "add to home screen" in the share menu as in https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/800/1*WIMnEGBboGMRDQqGgjmhdg.png?
