Born in Ipswich, Suffolk Jane Lapotaire adopted the family name of her stepfather, Lapotaire, at around the age of 12. She began studying at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in 1961, and joined the company in 1965, and has mostly focused her career towards the stage.
