Big Little Lies Premiere

249000.jpgOver the weekend, the limited HBO series Big Little Lies aired it's first episode. Based on the novel of the same name by Liane Moriarty, Big Little Lies stars Reese Witherspoon as Madeline Mackenzie, Nicole Kidman as Celeste Wright, Shailene Woodley as Jane Chapman, and Zoe Kravitz as Bonnie Carson. These characters, it seems will be involved in a web that will connect them all together, with sex, a gun, and a murder all involved. Alexander Skarsgard also appears in the show as Perry Wright, the husband of Celeste, and Adam Scott stars as Ed McKenzie, the husband of Madeline. All of the characters appear as though they are either running towards something or away from something else, and all of them appear to be caught in some sort of mess, together. Please be warned my review contains spoilers for those who haven't seen the first episode yet.

Laura Dern Gives a Powerful Monologue

This series was written by the books author, Ms. Moriarty alongside the show's creator David E. Kelley. David is famous for Ally McBeal and his most recent work on Amazon’s Goliath. This show seems to draw more parallels with the latter - there is a death, (which is made very clear to the viewer from the get-go) and there is a secret, something hidden that's just below the surface, that we hope as viewers, will get revealed to us in time. I didn't like Goliath that much, and I'm not sure if I like this series any better. However, I am going to continue watching it, but I really didn't find it very gripping. I don't know if it has peaked my interest enough to see who is dead and what Jane's backstory is. This is mainly due to the fact that the integral conflict within this story seems to be about whether Ziggy (Iain Armitage) actually hurt Arnabella (Ivy George). I don't know if I care enough about either of these characters (or their respective families) to keep on watching to find out if it was Iain who did it or if he didn't - then who did?. I'm sure a lot of viewers felt that way, hence the murder that occurred. If this show was just about a kid getting hurt it would be akin too much to The Slap, except it would be considered as taking itself way more seriously then The Slap ever did. A standout moment for me was Laura Dern who plays Renata Klein, as she did have a great monologue about the societal pressures that are placed on women, that I am interested in seeing explored more as the series progresses, but other then that this show really didn't move me.

That being said, I plan on continuing watching the next episode and I will check back in with you guys either when I stop halfway through because I couldn't handle it anymore, or when the series has finished. Have you seen the show yet, if so do you agree with my points, or are you hooked already?

Check out the trailer to get a better idea as to what is going on in this show.
