Ratings Roundup for the Week of September 18, 2022

Welcome to Premiere Week for the 2022-23 season! One change you will see with the ratings this season is that ratings numbers are carried out to the hundredth instead of the tenth. This was done mostly in response to The CW. So many of that network's shows ended up as a 0.0 when only measured to the tenth of a ratings point last season. It only made sense to try and show some variety moving forward.

Usually, Premiere Week follows the Emmy Awards, but since NBC aired the awards ceremony on a Monday instead of the traditional Sunday (they didn't want to lose an NFL game), premiere week was delayed by the networks. For those who track the Emmy Awards ratings, this year's ceremony hit a new low (1.09 and 5.9 million viewers). That could be the bellwether for another rough year of awards ratings for networks.

And now for the first Ratings Roundup of the 2022-23 season!

ABC had a few of its summer-fare programs wrap up last week. The network also shifted its Wednesday comedy block around during the summer. The Conners and The Goldbergs switched timeslots, while Big Sky moved from Thursday to Wednesday. Even with the switch in days, Big Sky was still the lowest-rated drama for the network so far. Barely scraping two million viewers is not the best way to earn another season.

CBS enjoyed an NFL Overrun to start its fall season. NCIS opened low, with one of the lowest ratings for a new episode in the show's history. That could be a sign that the long-running series may finally be running out of steam. The three FBI shows are already renewed for next season, so fans of that franchise can sit back and enjoy the season.

NBC was the only network to premiere a new series last week. The rebooted Quantum Leap opened with the second-lowest ratings for a drama for the Peacock Network. Not the big opening the network execs had hoped for. If those numbers fall too far after the looky-loos have had their peek, the chances of a second season are rather low.

FOX continued to see its one new show tank. Monarch is not off to a good start as even repeats of the Sunday animation block managed to beat it. The Masked Singer opened a mere shadow of its former ratings glory but is in no danger. 9-1-1 had yet another strong premiere for the network, taking the top slot on the ratings chart.

The CW won't premiere its fall season until October, so enjoy the repeats and imports until then. With the sale of the network to Nexstar finalised, no show currently airing on the network is safe. (See the bloodbath at the end of last season as an example). Nexstar has said it wants to expand the viewership of the network beyond youth-focused shows to include more comedies and procedurals. Chances are it's going to be a bumpy ride for fans of shows airing on the CW this season.

Only two new shows premiered last week, but more should premiere in the next week or two. What new shows are you looking forward to this season?

I wouldn't be surprised. After last season's bloodbath, The CW seems like a sinking boat everyone want to get out of. Besides, Stargirl hasn't been established as an Arrowverse show, and it premiered on DC Universe (not The CW) along with the rest of DC's HBO Max shows (Titans, Doom Patrol). A move to HBO Max wouldn't be out of the blue, it would be a move back home. I'd be in favour of such a move.

There are plenty of new shows I intend to check out, but none I'm really looking forward to. I've already watched the premiere episode of NBC's Quantum Leap. It's too early to offer an opinion. Let's see how it goes first after three or four episodes. Other shows I plan to sample are ABC's Not Dead Yet (premiere in 2023), CBS's Fire Country (premiere Oct. 7, 2022), CBS's So Help Me Todd (premiere Sept. 29, 2022), Fox's Accused (premiere in Jan. 2023), Fox's Alert (premiere in 2023), NBC's Found (premiere in 2023), NBC's Night Court (premiere in 2023), The CW's Gotham Knights (premiere in 2023), and The CW's The Winchesters (premiere Oct. 11, 2022). Out of those, Accused sounds the most promising. Since most of those shows have a midseason premiere, I will have to settle for Quantum Leap and Fire Country for now.

Well, thanks for this week's ratings roundup, @LadyShelley! :)

I have not watched the new QL yet. I adored the Bakula/Stockwell show, and I just don't know if I can do a reboot without them.

Gotham Knights looks interesting. The Winchesters ... 'eh I'm not so sure about since it sounds like they are upending the existing Supernatural canon to make it work. Regardless, both are CW shows, and as stated in the article, I don't want to get too attached to anything they are airing at the moment.

I saw John Larroquette was coming back for Night Court (since he's about the only original cast member left). Not sure how Dan Fielding will play in a world with metoo. The character was scuzzy (on purpose) in the 1980s-90s, so it will be a tightrope walk to have the character evolve but still, in essence, be Dan.

Here's to week two!
