Ratings Roundup for the Week of January 19, 2025

FOX saw Doc lose about two hundred thousand viewers last week. It's still the highest-rated scripted show for the network and is in no danger. The same cannot be said for Animal Control or Going Dutch. Both comedies barely pulled a million viewers last week. Rescue HI-Surf returned with its first new episode since November, down one hundred thousand viewers. It might squeak a renewal, but it's not a sure thing.

ABC saw its two freshman shows hold their audiences last week. High Potential and Shifting Gears were both even with the previous week. High Potential has already been renewed, and Shifting Gears should be an easy renewal decision for the network. The Rookie was down one hundred thousand viewers. Will Trent was down two hundred thousand viewers. Fans of Abbott Elementary celebrated the show's early renewal by finding an additional hundred thousand friends to watch last week.

CBS feasted on playoff football last week, which was good since the network still hasn't premiered any of its scripted shows. That will change this week. Hollywood Squares saw a big audience for a special episode on Sunday night thanks to a football boost. Unfortunately, those viewers did not follow the game show to its regular night, as it lost six hundred thousand viewers off its premiere. The Price is Right at Night was up four hundred thousand viewers, while Raid the Cage was even.

NBC premiered The Hunting Party to good numbers last week. It was the highest-rated show for the network, though it also had one of the smaller viewer numbers, thanks to airing opposite NFL Playoffs. Law & Order was up three hundred thousand viewers. Law & Order: SVU and Found were each up two hundred thousand viewers. The Irrational lost another two hundred thousand viewers. The show has consistently been the lowest-rated show for the network, and fans should prepare for bad news.

I am bummed that the Irrational might get cancelled.  I really enjoy the show.  I also feel the same about Going Dutch.  Does not seem to be getting better.

Things do not look good for either, but especially The Irrational.

FOX can be a bit unpredictable with its scripted shows. They see their scripted content as filler around whatever sports contracts they have. So depending on where they have gaps, Going Dutch or Animal Control could squeak a renewal, but I doubt both of them will.

NBC is a bit more traditional still, though it's gone to shorter seasons for a lot of its content. For that network it could come down to throwing darts to see what happens with Brilliant Minds, The Irrational, and Found. If they don't have much confidence in its upcoming pilots, they might keep more of the three around another year to plug schedule holes. And don't forget streamers are in the mix now. It's possible while the show is dropped from the network, it's picked up by Peacock. That scenario wasn't in the mix until a couple of years ago.

Sounds like The Irrational might get canceled, which would be a bummer. And as for Going Dutch, I won’t be heartbroken if it’s not renewed. Which is weird of me to say since the first two episodes I thought was entertaining.

The Irrational, Brilliant Minds, and Found are all low-hanging cancellation fruit. At least one of them will be cancelled. The question is, will it be more than one.

Things do not look good for Going Dutch or Animal Control. One of them is likely gone too. it will depend on what the network has in the pipe for next season.

If two get canceled on NBC, let them be the ones I don’t watch…sorry to those who like them.
