Throughout the beginning of the episode, Teal'c is unaware of the presence of a Goa'uld symbiote within Captain Samantha Carter. Later episodes establish that Jaffa do have Naquadah in their blood, and that Teal'c, like Cassandra Fraiser, is able to sense the presence of a symbiote.

Stargate Command first becomes aware that a Goa'uld symbiote can enter its host without leaving a scar; previously they did not know that this was possible.

This episode marks the first appearance of the Tok'ra in the series. They also played a major role in the two-part episode "The Tok'ra, Part 1" and "The Tok'ra, Part 2" of the same season, and become recurring allies throughout the remainder of the series.

This episode marks the second mention of the Goa'uld leadership known as the "System Lords"; the first mention is in "Thor's Hammer" in season 1. The only members met thus far are Ra and Apophis. Nirrti is mentioned, but does not appear until the episode "Fair Game".
