Sherlock goes after publishing magnate and blackmailer Charles Magnussen, one of the most despicable criminals that he has ever encountered.
It's now 2019. Does anyone believe Benedict Cumberbatch is going to have or make time to do any more of these shows? Or that Steven Moffatt even cares enough about this show to put in an effort? Moffatt once complained about criticisms he'd received for not producing more shows more often than every couple of years. (I'm paraphrasing from memory here.) Moffatt said that people didn't understand the time and effort it took to put together a 2 hour TV movie. In contrast, he indicated that people didn't complain about the number of years in between Robert Downey/Sherlock Holmes movie releases. That, to me, sounded like someone who had already moved on.
Moffatt and cast left the show while it was still in demand and the writing and acting was still pretty solid. At this point, I'm not sure I'd want them to come back for fear they would have lost whatever energy and edge they had during the three seasons. Like the original Arthur Conan Doyle stories, those shows are still fun to go back and revisit.
I loved the novelty of the first season with the introduction of an alternate Sherlock Holmes, who, while less mature than the version introduced by Arthur Conan Doyle, still retained many of the personality traits, quick wit, and unique abilities of the original. That they used Arthur Conan Doyles stories with a twist, made the updated Holmes character even more fun and interesting to watch.
Benedict Cumberbatch brought a, mostly recognizeable Sherlock Holmes to life.
Martin Freeman brought a somewhat different Dr. Watson to life and he did it brilliantly. This Dr. Watson was impressed with Sherlock's skills but not always impressed with Sherlock himself and let Sherlock know this. Plus, having to be the adult in the partnership, he had no problem protecting Sherlock from Sherlock when he could. This Dr. Watson seemed far more real and substantial than the Dr. Watson of Arthur Conan Doyle.
If they do bring Sherlock back, although I seriously doubt they will, I think there will be a need for a slightly more mature Sherlock who is maybe not quite as arrogant and so quick to leap before he looks. I think the character has to grow in the series.
I'd like to be wrong about this show not coming back. It would be nice to know one way or the other instead of just leaving it sitting in limbo. I think if a show doesn't come back within 3 years it should be considered ended unless it's in active production and there are solid release dates. While it's only been 2 years for Sherlock, I haven't seen anything about this show being in active production and given Benedict Cumberbatches fame and Moffatt's underwhelming interest in Sherlock, I'm thinking we've seen the last of Sherlock.
