I mean young children below their teens. You're way giving too much credit on the wild animlas, having killed all the pets. Not showing other pets and babies out in the open just not make any sense realistically. My gut tells me, missing kids/babies and demosticated pets have something to do with the plot of the story. My thoery is that their brains are probably not matured enough to be part of the hive/joining, but I'm probaly wrong :). But I'm almost sure that the milk is some sort of a sustence that binds them to the hive.
