Prime Video has opted not to renew The Sticky for a second season. The news comes more than two months after the six-episode first season of the Canadian heist comedy, starring Margo Martindale, Chris Diamantopoulos and Guillaume Cyr and guest starring Jamie Lee Curts, was released on Dec. 6.
Like another recently canceled Prime Video freshman comedy series, The Pradeeps of Pittsburgh, The Sticky could not break through and draw wide enough audience despite solid reviews (80% on Rotten Tomatoes). Comedies take longer than dramas to, um, stick, which could explain why streamers are doing fewer half-hour shows and why those shows have a generally higher cancellation rate after a single season.
The Sticky, produced by Blumhouse Television, Curtis's Comet Pictures, Jonathan Levine's Megamix and Sphere Media, was inspired by a real-life heist that made global headlines in 2012, which saw more than $18 million worth of maple syrup stolen from Quebec's national reserves.
The series follows Martindale as Ruth Landry, a tough, middle-aged maple syrup farmer who turns to crime when the bureaucratic authorities threaten to take away everything she loves. She teams up with the hot-tempered Bostonian mobster (Diamantopoulos), and a mild-mannered French-Canadian security guard (Cyr) to carry out a multi-million-dollar heist on Quebec's maple syrup surplus.
Creators, executive producers, showrunners and writers were Brian Donovan and Ed Herro; executive producers Levine and Gillian Bohrer for Megamix; Curtis for Comet Pictures; Jason Blum, Chris Dickie, Jeremy Gold, and Chris McCumber for Blumhouse Television; and Michael Dowse. Lauren Grant also served as executive producer, along with Josée Vallée and Bruno Dubé for Sphere Media, Inc and associate producer Russell Goldman for Comet Pictures.
That's true, it's a finite event. But still, they could have continued on in the same vein as Fargo which they obviously fashioned this "series" after. The pisser is, they needed at least one more episode to wrap this thing up. Instead, they leave us hanging by our ankles. I guess this just didn't fit the mold of all the mindless crap they shovel out season after season.
I am more surprised that this was even thought to maybe have an additional season. It is based on a true event. Only so much you can do with that.
