Born in Santurce, José Ferrer was 2 years old when his family moved to New York City in 1914. He was educated at a prestigious boarding school in Switzerland, returning to enroll at Princeton University, followed by a transfer to Columbia University. He made his theatrical debut In 1934, while still a college student, notably, his longest run on Broadway was performing in the play Brother Rat, which ran from 1936 to 1938 with 577 performances. 1948 marked his film debut as Charles VII of France in the Technicolor epic Joan of Arc. In 1949 he appeared in the episodes Cyranco de Bergerac and What Makes Sammy Run? in the live dramatic series The Philco Television Playhouse.
José Ferrer died at age 80 due to colorectal cancer.
