Pete Buttigieg is the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, and a 2020 Democratic U.S. presidential candidate. Elected mayor in 2011 and re-elected in 2015, he completed his second and final term. He graduated from Harvard University in 2004 and received a Rhodes Scholarship to study at the University of Oxford. Buttigieg joined the U.S. Navy Reserve as an ensign in naval intelligence in September 2009 and deployed to Afghanistan in 2014. In February 2021, he became the 19th United States Secretary of Transportation in President Joe Biden's administration.
