Henry Chapman

Henry Chapman is Professor of Archaeology at the University of Birmingham, UK. He is a landscape archaeologist with expertise across a wide range of dryland and wetland landscapes.

Henry Chapman is the Time Team Surveyor. Henry, who took over from Bernard Thomason for the 2002 series, is principally responsible for all the surveying of the excavated trenches, artefacts and the geophysics grids. This is why you tend to see him with a variety of yellow technical equipment.

The data he collects with this GIS equipment is used to create the maps which bring all the different information together in order to understand the sites investigated by Time Team. Henry also creates the three-dimensional computer models of the sites and their landscapes, working closely with Stewart Ainsworth to get a fuller picture of the landscape archaeology and the environmental development.

Henry's research interests centre on the later prehistoric period, and particularly the relationships between human activity and environmental change within past landscapes and focusing on wetland sites. He specialises in the use of digital technologies to enable the modelling and analysis of the wide range of information required for such study to engage with past sites and landscapes.

This interest in the potential of digital technologies within heritage has also expanded to research into the use of these within galleries, museums, libraries and archives.
