Born in Mbabane, Swaziland (present-day Eswatini), Noma Dumezweni arrived in England as a refugee at the age of seven. She began her acting career on stage before debuting on the small screen in 1994 in two sequential episodes of EastEnders. In 1999 she guested in an episode of The Knock, and in 2001 played the role of a witch in a television adaptation of Macbeth.
