Tim Robbins is an American actor and filmmaker, born Timothy Francis Robbins on October 16, 1958, in West Covina, California, and raised in New York City. He studied drama at UCLA and co-founded the experimental theatre company The Actors' Gang, becoming its artistic director. Robbins gained recognition in Bull Durham, Jacob's Ladder and The Player, winning the Cannes Best Actor Award for the latter. He portrayed imprisoned banker Andy Dufresne in The Shawshank Redemption. His films include Top Gun, The Hudsucker Proxy, Arlington Road, High Fidelity, War of the Worlds and Dark Waters. Robbins won an Academy Award and Golden Globe for his supporting performance in Mystic River. He wrote and directed Bob Roberts and Cradle Will Rock and earned an Oscar nomination for directing Dead Man Walking. His television credits include The Brink, Castle Rock and Silo, in which he plays Bernard Holland.
