A Quiet Night in Town: Part II Recap

Culp and the others go back into the bar and Culp finally pours them drinks. They ask Culp if he's going to leave Paladin laying out in the street, and Culp figures that Paladin is no threat to anyone. One of the men, Roy Smith, refuses the drink and says that no one mentioned shooting Kincaid down when his hands were tied. He says that they never saw Kincaid before, and Culp asks him what he intends to do about it. Roy tells them that he's as game for it as the rest of them but Kincaid's hands were tied. Culp says that they'll claim that Kincaid tried to escape and Paladin got in the way, and Remy will back them up. Roy walks out and Jory says that the place is dead and he's going over to Harding's by himself. Ben says that it's his privilege and Jory invites him to come along. Culp tells them to go out the front door and it won't hurt for them to see Kincaid's body in the street.

Paladin crawls over to Kincaid's body and then turns as Remy comes out. He says that he couldn't do anything, and Paladin tells him that Culp should have killed him the first time and walks off. Dot comes over and says that Roy is a good man, and threatens to tell Culp. Paladin tells her to do that, and Dot says that she wants to marry Remy and begs Paladin not to take him away from her.

When Paladin enters the bar, Culp says that he didn't want to hurt Paladin but Kincaid got under his skin. He regrets pulling the trigger, and Paladin tells Culp that he can live and stand trial or go for his gun. When Culp hesitates, Paladin insults him until he draws and then shoots Culp dead. Remy comes in and tells Paladin that he took a chance shooting left-handed. Paladin says that guns are his profession and Culp was a fool, and asks where the others are. Dot comes in and begs Paladin not to go after the others, and he leaves. Remy asks where Roy is, and Dot says that she can't tell him until she knows what side Remy is on.

Paladin goes out to Kincaid's body, says that he made him a promise, and then carries it into the store. Remy says that Kincaid is as good as the men who killed him. Dot figures that Kincaid got what coming to him, and Paladin should be satisfied now that Culp is dead. Paladin says that the men who killed Kincaid will die for a better reason, and Dot tells him that he's no better than the killers. She runs out, and Remy asks if Paladin is going to leave with Kincaid's body. The deputy sheriff says that Culp was a good man in his time and in his place, and says that people should speak well of the dead. Paladin gets a shotgun and says that he doesn't forgive Culp or the others. Remy insists that they only watched and never would have hung Kincaid, but Paladin doesn't believe it. When Paladin says that Kincaid died for nothing, Remy reluctantly agrees and Paladin says that they'll die the same way. He grabs a pair of manacles and says that they can surrender to him or die. Remy suggests that they may not want any more of it, and then asks if Paladin wants help. Paladin refuses but Remy grabs a gun and goes with him, saying that he owes the county his salary.

The telegraph operator, Sam Osser, is waiting with the telegram that came back for him. He tells them that Jory and the others are at the station, and says that he just wanted to tell Remy. He goes into the bar and Remy explains that Sam feels guilty because he told the others who Kincaid was. Paladin warns him that he may have to open fire on his friends, and Remy tells him that he'll feel guilty but he'll do his job... and wonders if Paladin is going to kill them out of justice or revenge.

Paladin doesn't answer and they go to the station. They split up and Paladin goes into a stable to get into a shooting position. Remy approaches the station and Ben tells him that's close enough. Jory is on top of the station, and tells Remy that all they want to do is live. Paladin tosses the chains out and tells Jory and Ben to put them on or he'll open fire. Jory doesn't believe that he'll get a fair trial and opens fire. Paladin grabs a pail and tosses it out, and when Jory shoots it Paladin kills him. Ben shoots Remy, who falls to the street with a bullet in his shoulder.

Ben calls to Jory and Paladin tells Ben that his friend is dead and tells Ben to put on the chains. When the younger man refuses, saying it was all for nothing, he fires at Paladin and Paladin kills him. Paladin goes over to Remy, who asks if he was mad when he squeezed the trigger. Remy wonders if Paladin still wants Roy, and Paladin figures that if he stops now it's been for nothing.

The next day at the station, Paladin arrives and tells Remy and Sam that he didn't find Roy. Dot comes out and Remy explains that she set her heart on Roy. Now Roy is eaten up with guilt and he's not like the others. Dot says that Paladin is as bad as Culp and the others, but Paladin says that he had a reason and they were playing. Roy comes out and says that he's sick of death of what they did but Paladin isn't going to put the chains on him. Paladin shows him the wire he received, which says that they found the real killer and Kincaid was innocent. Roy stares at the wire in shock, then tosses it on the ground. He tosses his gun on the ground and Dot breaks into tears and hugs Roy. Remy says that Roy would have killed Paladin before he learned the truth, and Paladin agrees.
