JUDGES LUKE BRYAN, LIONEL RICHIE, CARRIE UNDERWOOD
RETURN TO ‘AMERICAN IDOL’ FOR SEASON NINE ON ABC AND HULU
Live Virtual Audition Tour ‘Idol Across America’ Begins Tuesday, Aug. 26
The historic star-maker competition series “American Idol” welcomes back music industry legends and iconic judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie, along with veteran host Ryan Seacrest to help discover America’s next singing sensation for season seven on ABC. “American Idol” ranked as the No. 1 program in the Sunday 8-10 p.m. time slot last season among Adults 18-49 and its time period for the fourth straight year in the demo.
"American Idol" has gotten the golden ticket from ABC. The long-running competition series has been renewed for its seventh season at the network, which also marks its 22nd overall season. The announcement comes ahead of the Season 21 finale on May 21, at which former judge Keith Urban will return to the show to mentor the Top 3 finalists. "American Idol" has provided consistently strong ratings for ABC since the network picked it up in 2018 (after it ended its run at FOX in 2016).
Alanis Morissette and Ed Sheeran are helping Luke Bryan hold down the fort at American Idol on Sunday. The pair will be guest judges on the singing competition show, filling in for Katy Perry and Lionel Richie, who will be in the UK for the coronation of King Charles III.
Host Ryan Seacrest has signed a new deal to continue on the show, which he's hosted for the past 17 seasons (the first 15 of them on Fox). He joins judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan, who closed their deals in August. Bobby Bones is also set to return as Idol's in-house mentor.
“American Idol” has been renewed for a third season at ABC.
This will be the singing competition show’s 18th season overall, including the 15 seasons that aired on Fox before the show moved to ABC in 2018.
The question remains, however, if the show’s current judging panel of Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan will return for the new season. As Variety reported on Sunday,
