Actually it'd be better if this episode just gets deleted (there's 2 of it)

I'll sort the rest once it's done

It appears that it's due to the Blind Auditions Olympic Premiere; it states that it's a "special preview of the new season" and we currently have it listed as a special, however the NBC site has it as episode 1 of season 11.
Personally I'm not sure which it should be so I'll just leave this information here.

I think this came up a few weeks ago, but I don't remember if any decision was made on what to do with it.

It's a special. The episode only have 2 blind auditions that also appear in the blind auditions part4.
Re: The Voice, NBC and DirectTV on-screen info are listing the Olympics episode as episode 1, not as a special. See http://www.nbc.com/the-voice/episodes. Thus TVMaze's numbering is all off by 1and this means that through the rest of the season, TVMaze episode numbering will not match up with what viewers are reading on their screens (TV or online). Can we please re-align to match?

The last time we asked about it, it was going to be a staff discussion as to whether we'd count it as a special or as episode 1.
Unfortunately I don't think that they posted the verdict of that so we'll have to wait to see what they say.

Excellent - thanks! Hopefully NBC's own numbering will sway them to make it match....

We have to go with the official site listing then, only if on-screen data overrules it we do not go with the official site. if anyone that has watched that episode can confirm that there was an on-screen "special", then we list it as a special.
Otherwise it needs to be episode 1, sorry for all the trouble.
I'm afraid our policy can't be 100% conclusive for an inconsistency like this.
According to our policy..
- Data on the show's official website is used when there's no info available on-screen or in a press release.
The website calls it episode #1, so it should be episode #1 here.
- In general, anything announced as "preview", "sneak peak", "special", "event" should be regarded as a special.
NBC calls it a "special preview", which means it's a special.
- The first non-special episode in a season should always be numbered "1"; specials don't have an episode number.
Specials can't have an episode number, so it can't be episode #1. (And the next - real - episode becomes episode #1)
I'm open to other opinions, but I'd say our listing is fine as it is now. Yes, the official site lists it as episode #1, but it also calls it a special, which can't both be true in our system. Since it's obviously a special according to the rest of our definitions as well (different premise, only fragments from other episodes) it makes sense to stick with that and keep it as special instead of #1.

Someone a page or so back notes the content has been used in other episodes. Is this typical of this kind of program? Or is it indicative of its special-ness?

This is also true, a really weird thing, but I am fine with it either way, i got no strong opinion on this :)

To cover all possible cases your FAQ would be a binder not a page ... call it the exception that proves the rule and pick the path that it matches closest ... or flip a coin ... my 2 cents
Re: The Voice episode numbering, in the absence of clear guidelines, I would hope that practicality and utility would win out over semantics. In this case, we can confirm that on-screen guides (Direct TV and Comcast personally confirmed by me) and the NBC website list the Olympics episode as #1, with all others counting up from that. If the goal of TVMaze data is to help users track and map to the episodes they are viewing, I would expect the episode numbers to match the numbers are presented to them as they are watching. That is not the case with the current numbering.
Clearly, I do feel strongly. :-) For context, we use TVMaze episode data via the API to give episode details to our users and collect additional information about what's happening in the episode (namely, the music used). If the episode numbers don't match what viewers see, our users have difficulty mapping which episode is which, and our music data gets out of sync/incorrect.

As david stated this is a very difficult decision, the official site states it as ep 1 but also states it as a special. And a user told us that the ep1/special only has two auditions that are later shown in ep 4.

I definitely understand the difficulty. Since you and David both indicated you didn't have strong feelings, I chimed in to hopefully provide context for why we do have a strong opinion on why it's helpful for the numbering to match NBCs. My only goal is to provide context to help you make a decision. If this isn't the place to do so, please clarify the best way to do this.
I guess I would also ask who/what would be hurt or confused by changing the episode numbering match what NBC shows?
In complicated cases, I would think any decision made should serve the goal of decreasing confusion/increasing clarity for users of the information. Absent the context of this back and forth and the grey area and nuance in trying to apply the policy (your quoted comment), your average user just relying on the episode listings would be confused by the mismatch in numbering. As I wrote previously, just trying to urge a focus on utility and practicality rather than semantics in these areas where policy is unclear and you need to make a one-off decision.
Anyway, I'm done discussing here. If TVMaze continues with the current numbering, we'll be editing our data manually on our side to make sure it matches what users will see from the network.

There will always be decisions others do not agree on, david has decided to keep it as a special, no hard feelings tho :)
