Make 'Gender' field mandatory

tnt wrote 8 years ago: 1

There's a lot of people with the 'Gender' field set to unknown. I can hardly imagine the situation, when it is not possible to determine the gender of a person you adding. Only if you too lazy to make some additional research for the most tricky cases :)

So I think it would be reasonable to obligate contributors to always fill this field.

Sometimes I really have no idea, especially on co-stars and cast with literally no info showing on googling their name (which of course will be one of those names that both genders use..). iMDB does seem to default to male, as I've found women there listed as men.

So I wouldn't change the way we do it now

Also we would have to change how we deal with musical groups then, as you don't want genders on those.

Okay, maybe it's only me, but I've never been in the situation, when I wasn't able to determine a gender of a certain actor / actress. Can you give some examples, please? As for bands – maybe a checkbox saying 'Band' or something will do? So in the future (maybe) we can have some filters at the 'People' page, allowing to browse only male / female / band entries.

I fear this is an issue with our external importers. They don't give us an option to select their gender, so it is very likely that the majority of persons without gender added to our database were added by externals.

Oh, I see... Ok then, we'll fix 'em one by one :)

If only there was a way to do some advanced search...

We've talked about making a people list where certain data is missing in order to improve the data addition workflow. Like f.e. gender, birth date, country of birth,...
But for now http://www.tvmaze.com/dataentry/peopleimages is probably a good alternative of people with missing information.

And if you can't determine from the actor name, you can typically determine from the character name(s). If Sandy Jones is playing John, odds are it's a male Sandy, not a female Snady.

Just putting this out there, shouldn't there be a gender option beyond male/female? Because not everyone identifies as a binary gender and if that information is publically available, for example Amandla Stenberg has puclically idenitifed herself to be non-binary. So... if listing gender is going to mandatory, something more representative than male/female should be available.

And yet she is being casted only for female characters, so...

Anyway, as Thomas noted, there's still this thing with the external importers, so I think there'll be no mandatory option in the nearest future.

Maybe we could do a "Fix Profiles Day" day or something and make a thing out of it. Bet we could fix a lot if we promote it a bit and maybe set a goal for it.

I'm not sure that matters. If you're listing genders of the characters themselves, then sure (but even then, what happens as we start seeing more non-binary characters on TV?). But Amandla has specifically stated she's non-binary, so even if she is playing a female character, she's still non-binary. Even those actors who identify as male/female have been known to play characters of the opposite sex, doesn't make them that sex. Playing a male/female character doesn't automatically make you that gender. The same way that Neil Patrick Harris playing straight characters doesn't make him straight. (Which isn't a particularly great parallel, but it illustrates my point.)

I'm just saying... At this point, it seems like there should be some consideration of going beyond the solely male/female gender distinction. Regardless of whether this becomes mandatory or not, only having male/female gender options is fast becoming outdated and inaccurate.

Should we make it mandatory or change anything gender related, we'll consider including other gender identifications.
