Main Cast / Character Count Bug

So, I noticed a thing, which I'm assuming is a bug, and after a bit of searching back through the forums, I think it's connected to what's mentioned here.

I've just started working my way through https://www.tvmaze.com/shows/716/spartacus, and it's one of those shows where some of the main characters are played multiple actors (https://www.tvmaze.com/search/characters?show_id=716&q=spartacus & https://www.tvmaze.com/search/characters?show_id=716&q=naevia). Per policy, there should only be one character listing, however, when I attempt to "merge" them (as I often do with multiple listings for guest characters without incident), it totally messes up the character appearance count (https://www.tvmaze.com/shows/716/spartacus/characters), only the numbers for one of the actors appears, rather than the combined number of both actors. For the moment I'm leaving them separate until they can be merged together without the bug.

To add insult to my own injury, I did something similar over at http://www.tvmaze.com/shows/7537/goodnight-sweetheart/characters a while ago, with both http://www.tvmaze.com/characters/206794/goodnight-sweetheart-phoebe-bamford & http://www.tvmaze.com/characters/206795/goodnight-sweetheart-yvonne-sparrow being played by 2 actors, however my brain didn't notice the character count was off at the time. Obviously I've gone back now & observed the same bug I'm having with Spartacus.

So yes, I think I've explained that in a way that makes sense. Hopefully it's something with a relatively straight forward fix (or I've overlooked an obvious thing I'm doing wrong, that's totally an option).

Yeah, I remember there was some problems with proper display of appearance count. If I'm not mistaken those with wrong count need to be updated manually by one of the admins.

Yeah, that's more or less the conclusion I came to from the earlier thread. Given that it was before my time, I figured it was best to post here, just to confirm what the situation was and how I should go about the Spartacus changes. :)

That's weird, the character merge is supposed to handle this and re-calculate the appearances. What's one of the characters in Spartacus that you've used the merge tool on?

Actually, I haven't (permanently) done it for the Spartacus main characters yet. I temporarily attempted to unite the two https://www.tvmaze.com/search/characters?show_id=716&q=spartacus, but noticed the wonky character count and reverted it until I got word here about what exactly was going on with it. I didn't want to mess with stuff in case it was easier to fix with them like this. It's definitely just a problem for main cast merges, rather than recurring cast merges.

But the example of what it looks like (for all of them I've tried) is http://www.tvmaze.com/shows/7537/goodnight-sweetheart/characters with the Phoebe Bamford and Yvonne Sparrow characters, where the count only reflects one of the actresses appearances and not both.

OK, I get it now :-)

There was a bit of confusion because there's an actual character merge tool which truly merges two characters: all information linked to one character (cast entries, guest cast entries, images, etc) are transferred to a different character and the first one is deleted. If you use the merge tool, the apparance count was already re-calculated correctly.

However, the merge tools are only available to CC and higher. So by "merging characters" you mean updating a Cast or Guest Cast entry and changing the character that's referenced. In that scenario the appearances indeed were not properly re-calculated. That should be fixed now!

Goodnight Sweetheart has been fixed, and if you spot any other character lists that are botched I can sort those out too.

Ah, I see. Not having CC access, I was unaware of the actual character merge tool. Obviously I've been doing it manually one-by-one, which is what caused the issue. That makes sense.

If you need a character merging you can just post in the Edit Requests thread for it to be done.
