Looking for Beta testers for Episode Guide (Android) - TVmaze Sync (Premium User API Required)

deleted wrote 7 years ago: 1

I have just opened up beta testing for Episode Guide (Android App) which allows automatic syncing with TVmaze using the premium user API.

- Any existing shows and episodes you have on TVmaze will be synced to Episode Guide

- Any show or episode you mark as watched/unwatched will be synced up to your TVmaze account here.

- Automatic syncs will happen every 24 hours.

- You can trigger a manual sync in the TVmaze settings in the app.

- If you are an existing Episode Guide user your existing data will be synced to TVmaze the first time the sync runs.

If you would like to try out the feature please sign up to the beta test below and install Episode Guide from the Google Play Store.

You can find the TVmaze sync settings be pressing the Cog icon in the top right of the app.

Do you by any chance have plans to add trakt support as well? At least for the purpose of sync watched episodes.

Yes, I have had many requests to add it, so I plan on adding it as another data source.

In theory it should be possible to have both enabled at once so you can migrate data from TVmaze to Trakt and Trakt to TVmaze.

Hi wezley,

Before I do, I'd like to confirm one thing:

Can you remove the API key after you add it?

Currently on TVMaze there's no way to regenerate your API key so once you hand it over, they'll always have it and you can't "revoke access"

That's very interesting. I have Plex scrobbling everything I watch to Trakt, so I thought it could be nice to mark watched episodes on TVmaze automatically. Yes, I'm a lazy SoB :D

Doesn't seem to be working for me. It keeps saying "Please check your internet connection" on anything except Discover.

It finally connected and f*cked up my watchlist COMPLETELY. Every episode from more than 300 shows is marked as unwatched, except for 1 or 2 episodes here and there. I'm at loss of words, literally... Thank you very f*cking much. Deleting it now.

I really hope that all sync is done locally and not on some remote server, so deleting the app would be enough to keep it from messing with my watchlist again.

@wezley98, I suggest you test it a bit more thoroughly by yourself or contact me to help you test. And to avoid what happened to tnt from happening to anyone else.
That's not something to be taking lightly.

Hi TNT,

I am really sorry for the trouble the app caused you. I did test this first on my account and it worked ok, but there is obviously a bug in the syncing code which meant that it didn't work correctly for you. I will be a lot more careful next time before allowing people to test this on their real accounts.

Uninstalling the app will stop the sync from happening.

Could you create "dummy accounts" and/or duplicate a users account, strip it of all identifying info (email, social names, etc) and have them available for developers to use as a test bed even before going into beta? Just a thought ...

You can now reset your API key through the dashboard.

Just a warning for those wanting to press that button out of curiosity. At the moment of writing, There isn't a "are you sure?" alert.
So it instantly resets your key if you press it.
