Create Show vs Request a Show

SilverSurfer wrote 7 years ago: 1

I saw an article about a new show on Teletoon (Canada) called Cupcake & Dino: General Services and did a search to see if it was added. The search turned up negative. In fact the show was already added as just Cupcake & Dino. I discovered this when trying to add the thetvdb.com number to the entry and was blocked as it was already in use.

Which brings me to my suggestion(s) ...

1. Better search is really needed. My search should have pulled up the entry as at least a potential match.

2. Amend the Create Show function to mirror the Request a Show function. If I had added the two IDs at the start, I would have been blocked at the get-go and would have saved work for me and now someone else to delete the duplicate. Either that or remove the Create Show and funnel all additions through Request a Show.

As always, thanks for reading. :)

Adding on / amending #2 above to

2b. Amend the Create Show function to include more than Request a Show function by having the ability to also add a Poster URL and select up to 3 Genres in addition to the IDs. It may help create more complete entries as all the data is on the one page to begin with ... sometimes, being human, we can either get distracted or forget to go back and make all the changes/additions for a new entry.

+100000, especially for 1.

But everything above was already asked for many times. Apparently it is not a priority :(

+1 but Rome was not build in a day :)

A tip: if the site search does not return a result, use the google, adding "site:tvmaze.com" to the end of your query. This is proven to be more efficient way to get the partial matches.

#1 might sound obvious, but there is hardly a search system in the world that works like this. It means you'd also get a lot of false positives, for example searching for "house of cards" would give you the dozens of shows with "house" in its name as well, as opposed to merely relevant results. Don't take my word for it, just try it out at https://www.imdb.com/find?q=the+matrix+lorem+ipsum or https://www.themoviedb.org/search?query=the%20matrix%20lorem%20ipsum or https://www.rottentomatoes.com/search/?search=the%20matrix%20lorem%20ipsum (I could go on).

#2 makes sense; because of technical limitations it's not possible to add the external ID's to the create show form right now, but there is an open ticket to track that.

Is there a block on someone using the Request a Show function and then approving their own request?

Not at all, feel free to do so. As you say, it might even make sense to completely get rid of "create show" in the future in favor of the request function.

Don't know how much coding it would require to alter the page to a Request/Create a Show and then, depending on authority level, either immediately create the show or put it into the waiting for review queue.

I'm going to try the method for my next few creates to see how it works ... I don't foresee any problems.

Edit/Addition: As an extra plus, IMO, is the ability to add a comment such as a link to the source of the news used to create the show in the first place. Creates a nice audit trail ... and if there's one thing a 30+ year government worker loves, it's an audit trail!

After adding two shows, I think I like using the Request a Show route. Saves a few clicks over the other route and, in cases like earlier today a whole heck'va lot of clicks.

Plus ... audit trails ... ummmmmmmmmmm, audit trails!

So, you're saying in 2b (and further comments) that you want to be able to specify everything on 1 page?

I could maybe see a 'Go to next step / Skip this step' working;

i.e Create Show
Add news
Skip adding externals
Add genres
etc

(Except from the first, the order isn't really important)

Essentially redirect to the next step.

That'd work too I think. :)
