Jersey Shore: Family Vacation

There was a small discussion about this in the edit requests a few months ago regarding the season/episode numbering.

https://www.tvmaze.com/threads/2677/edit-requests?page=327#51698

Juan said it'd be cool to have a thread about this to understand why we aren't going by mtv.com's numbering, and maybe we can get a final decision to go by mtv or not with this instead of the constant changing back and forth... so here's the deal.

The season 2 episodes in 2018 are mostly set in Las Vegas, and then they leave Vegas and go back to the house from the original series and then rent a new house with the majority of the topics dealing with Ronnie's relationship drama. They also say "Part 2" in the show's title on the credits. The episodes in 2019 remove "Part 2" and add Angelina to the intro and start off with Mike Sorrentino's court date and the 10 episodes from 2019 that mtv.com says are part of "season 2" are basically about his sentencing and planning his wedding before he has to report to prison, so there is a definite shift in tone from the episodes before that. The first episode of what mtv.com refers to as "season 3" takes place the next day, or at least within a few days after the wedding and then they show bits and pieces over the next few months (Deena having her baby, Snooki telling people she's pregnant, Christmas stuff, etc) and the first episodes ends with Mike on his way to prison with references to that in the rest of the season so far. The real-life time between episodes in one season ranging from August (last episode of 2018) to October (first episode of 2019) but having the real-life time in between season 2 and season 3 be a day or so apart is odd.

This is kind of like when a show films episodes during one season but doesn't air them until the next, and it's possible that maybe they meant to still be part of season 2 but waited too long to air them so mtv.com just numbered their seasons based on production and not by any broadcast logic (waiting 7 months and then airing 10 episodes of season 2 leading right into season 3 is a weird way to do it). On top of all that, mtv.com has some errors anyway. There were a few episodes where the schedule said one title and the episode guide said another after it aired ("The Dude Ranch" became "Guido Cowboys", for example), and they have designated clip shows as season episodes and not specials before and currently have the special "Unseen Moments You Can’t Unsee" and "Guido Cowboys" both listed as season 2 episode 21.. so mtv.com doesn't seem to know what they're doing anyway. The narrative for each has been definitely different, and personally I think the ones in 2019 all fit together better as a "season" but mostly I think we just need a definite answer about if we should keep it based on what mtv.com says online or how they're actually broadcasting them.

So it looks like MTV go back and forth with the phrasing; press releases are here: https://www.mtvpress.com/series/jersey-shore-family-vacation/press-releases

Initial press release says renewed for second season then later on it announces premiere dates for part 2.

A similar thing again; renewal for season 3 and then later on just says it's returning for new episodes.

P.S. Those press releases are also displayed on thefutoncritic which was referenced as a source in the Edit Requests thread, but it's always nice to go straight to the source =]

I really do not mind how we list them, but we should make a final decision on it.

The later press releases seem to be going with what the official site of MTV is displaying.

To me it makes sense to put everything in 2019 as one season, it follows common broadcast sense and the storylines match more... but if nobody else has a strong opinion either way and it's going to keep causing problems I'm perfectly ok with doing it by MTV's nonsensical way lol
