non-binary people

Recently Demi Lovato came out as non-binary (https://twitter.com/ddlovato/status/1394913215994155009) and says that they use "they/them/theirs" pronouns. imo., non-binary people's pronouns should be respected and their genders on TVmaze should be changed to "unknown", to change the way they are credited ("Demi Lovato as themselves", rather than "Demi Lovato as herself").

In Demi's case, their gender was changed last week, after they came out as non-binary, but it was later changed back.

This has also been the case for other people who have came out as non-binary, e.g. Elliot Page, Jonathan Van Ness, Janelle Monáe, Nico Tortorella & more, and it usually turns into an "editing war" back and fourth.

Anyone who has a coming out as non-binary should be treated this way here on tvmaze, so it should be "unknown" in such cases, I will revert them all back!

I think what @Nivekolsen is saying is that we shouldn't just have the options of male and female as genders, and non binary should also be an available option as the people identifying as a They should be credited as such instead of a 'Unknown' which is probably offensive for somebody identifying as non binary.

ahh ok, then we should probably add this!

+1, unknown is quite offensive, I just figured it was better than using female

It seems like it was discussed but never resolved

@david could you weigh in please.

Agree, we should have the option to choose non-binary as gender. Until we do i suggest that it is written in the person bio so people know why they are listed as unknown.

do we really need this? like with a double act or band, if a person doesn't fit into either the male/female category, it can always just be left blank.

Yes we do, it's a matter of respect. Listing someone that identifies themselves as non-binary as "Unknown" is not only wrong but also a tad on the offensive side.

Besides that, 'unknown' is just technically incorrect. It is known, it is just beyond the system's capabilities, not only for non-binaries but for bands, collective pen names etc. I think it was already proposed to change 'unknown' to 'other', or 'not specified' which shouldn't be that hard I suppose, and yet 2 years later we're discussing this again.

yeah sorry i wasn't reffering to the 'unknown' tag, more of the addition of other genders to the list. much rather see other things get added to the actor pages first.. an official website for example.

Also, maybe it'd be better just to hide the 'gender' property from the person's info if it's not set, instead of showing 'gender: unknown', which is basically useless.

david wrote 4 years ago: 4

I'm planning to add a 3rd gender option, called "Other", who'd be credited as "themselves".

Updated the policy:

The gender for this person. If their gender is not known or not applicable, the field should be left empty. If their gender is known, but is neither (exclusively) male or female, it should be set to "other".
