Season Status

woz2101 wrote 2 years ago: 4

Hi,

How can we get a status of a season, for example: some seasons go on hiatus and the site will say (eg: s04e10) and appear like the season is finished, but it isn't as s04e11 will air in 3/4 months time.

It would help if we had a new field called "Status" that could indicate some of these options

Airing - Currently in it's airing cycle              Hiatus - Season is on hiatus and will return soon             Complete - Season is complete, waiting for next season

This would REALLY help for tracking shows, especially our favourites

Any thoughts ?

While we don't keep track of shows that's on a hiatus you can use episodeOrder on the season level and the show status to tell you if there's more episodes left and if the show is still running.

I see it as redundant of show status, We have the To Be Determined for your Hiatus option :)

Nope, I think what the original post is suggesting is shows that don't air all episodes at once. To be determined is to be used when we don't know if a show will return after its filled its full season order.

So for shows that air a season in 2 intervals, for example?

The user is suggesting a show like 'The Flash' is out on hiatus until new episodes resume next March.

Whereas 'To Be Determined' should be used when a show ends a series, but it is unknown if another series will end, for example, Sherlock

A typical British TV move here, 4 series over several years, they could announce a new series next year, they could announce a new series in 4 years time. Or we may never get another series again but the BBC have never commented either way 😂.

'Hiatus' means something rather specific in TV circles. Basically that the show is off the air and its return is questionable.

Not sure we need another status that would need to be updated and changed every few months, anyway. A better solution might be better tracking/showing the number of episodes ordered for a season. That way if episode 10 airs in November but there is nothing immediately following the next week, users would know that ten more episodes are in the pipe and will air at a future date.

Not always, when shows go off around Christmas, that's also a hiatus. "Hiatus" is just the technical word used for a planned break, whether it's between the midseason finale and the winter premiere (or whatever term the network wants to use to call each) or in production between seasons, or even when the cast and crew go on their Christmas/winter vacation during filming.

The episode order is also a tad confusing, sometimes they're not reported and sometimes shows have added more without an official statement. There's also the occasions where they order, say, 13 episodes but they air 12 because they join them together. The Office, for example, did this to account for their special longer episodes, it was technically using two episodes with one continuous plot. So if that were to happen, we'd have a mysterious 'ghost' episode that wouldn't be added.

I agree that we don't need more statuses. Though maybe the season entry can be expanded a little, we've got a  "premiere month" so maybe we could have something to designate a season finale month as well. Or maybe a box to check if the season has officially 'completed.' Unless we retroactively add the order or update it accordingly after the season has ended..

Thanks for everyone's feedback on the topic.

Something like a FinaleAired on the season entry would also work beautifully :)

Just to add an example: I check Dynasty now and season 5 is definitely not 2 episodes as indicated (https://www.tvmaze.com/shows/21656/dynasty/episodes) so hard to track :)

Thanks for at least reading and discussing the options :)
