solar, waaaay back when, I used to read the last chapter of mystery novels, to find out who did it. The more things change.....

Brit, so sorry about Prunella Scales, she was a perfect counterpoint to Cleese.

Sad to say, we lost another, Tchéky Karyo:

Deedee, I just read this and was coming here to tell you!

I loved him, I am such a big fan. So, so sorry to hear this. I am going over to read your BBC link now.

Just  finished   watching   Series 5  of   Last Tango in Halifax  and guess who pops  up  ..  Timothy  West  ..  ( husband of  Prunella  Scales )  who  died  in 2024.    He was care giver to his wife  Pru  who had  battled   dementia .  This is all  kind of personal  to me as I was  caregiver to my mother who also battled  dementia .  Did this for 6 years until I just had to put her in a home .  Nerves were shot thru  stress.  Now  Pru and Tim are both  gone .

Solar, I never really understood, until now, how the years we spent as caregivers - which was done with much love and a whole heart - does continue to impact our lives long after our loved ones are gone. For me, I always saw myself as very strong, I am only now realizing the emotional and physical toll that it took. I wouldn't have done anything any other way, but I can see that I carry the remnants of years of unending stress, constant worry and physical exhaustion with me. And I know you do too.

I guess I thought I would compartmentalize it and just carry on. It doesn't really work that way. It never leaves you.

I always have had a place in my heart for Timothy and Prunella.

Brit  ....  I only found out later , the damage (  and the danger  )   stress  can do to  ya .  Although you may not feel it at the time your going thru it  and you may think  that your not being effected by it    ...   you  are .  Stress  eats up  a chemical  in your body  that is used to keep your  immunity  strong  and  healthy .  When your immunity  is compromised or weakened  it is not capable of fighting off  diseases  that can  over take you. Cancer  and other diseases have an advantage when it encounters a weakened  immune  system .

RIP  to  Pauline Collins  ..   she had a long  career .   Good to hear from ya  Sheerwater .

deedee713 wrote 3 months ago: 1

Thank you, Sheerwater. Tried to remember her in Upstairs, Downstairs, one of my favorites, but I can't.

solar, our UK tv of old is dying off. Much as my favorite rock stars of old are. *sigh*

Brit, you are correct...again. I gave Karen Pirie another try and Season 2 is excellent.

Is Season 1 as well done?

Solar, I totally understand what you are saying, believe me. It has taken me years to build my immune system back up and I have never totally recovered.

So sorry that we have lost Pauline Collins, Sheerwater. For us, each passing marks another great loss. As Deedee said, our old guard is leaving us. So sad.

Dee, I am trying to remember S1 of KP, was it as good as the second series... I don't remember so, but it was a good enough a watch to propel me to the second season.

Just finished E5 of "The Gold"... I've been stringing it along as much as I could. What an emotional episode, it was excellent! This has turned out to be soo much more than I ever expected.

One more left to go. So glad there is going to be a second season. Got to go check to see what is coming up next for us.

November 23... "The Great Escaper". This story captivated me when it happened. I was cheering for Mr. Jordan from here in the States. I hope they do a good job with it - after "The Gold" I don't want to be let down.

solar wrote 3 months ago: 1

Gotta  Keep that immune system up  Brit  by keeping  stress  down ...  lot more to my  health story ( totally healthy )  but that is for another time .

dee  ..    ' our UK tv of old is dying off. '    True enough , I recently found on one of my obscure  cable channels (  while surfing )  a new   detective show , well   not   new  (  1993  1998 )  but new to me called   Wycliffe ,  never seen it  before  and it's not  bad.  I dropped it into my  PVR  so when it airs I get  a copy.

Brit  ...   After they found out the gold from the heist was split the team has a lot more  work to do  ...  good for us as it gives us Season 2 .  Still can't get over  Hugh  Bonneville ...  he looks different , sounds different , personality is different .  Can't call him an actor who  plays the same  character in every  part he plays .  lol    ' The Great Escaper ' should be a fun watch .  Glenda Jackson's  last role.  Nov. 23   Looking forward to seeing  Michael  Caine  as  well.   What I'm  really waiting for  is  '  All   Creatures ... '   S6  E1  ( my feel good  show )   starting  on  Jan.  11.  I have no interest in Miss  Scarlet  at  all  , might watch an Ep. ta see if I change my  mind.

Solar, I agree Hugh Bonneville has been a standout. I never gave him great applause for his portrayal of Robert in Downton, he doesn't come to the top of the heap when you think of the characters (and actors) who define that series, but in this, he has excelled both in the part and as an actor.

The scene at the end of E5 with Edwyn Cooper and his mother was exceptional - nobody loves and supports you like your Mother, nobody...if you have been blessed in this life to have a loving one. Made me tear up.

Okay, "Wycliffe" - a favorite of mine. I watched the entire series on The 'Tube a number of years ago, before the series hit streaming. It is a good solid series. Jack Shepherd is strong in the role of Det. Superintendent Wycliffe and his team of Lucy and Doug make the series what it is. It is intelligent, interesting and has all that scenery of Cornwall.

It is now streaming on Britbox, so about a year ago I started rewatching the series, and to me, it still holds up today as an absorbing watch.

I have no interest in "Miss Scarlet" either, but I might also give an episode a go to see if my opinion still holds.

Brit, the first season of KP was very good, I don't know what I was thinking when I off it. I hope there's a third season.

Thanks for the viewing tips, solar and Brit. I am too impatient and then regret it.

We are of a mind on Miss Scarlet, the chemistry between Scarlet and the Duke was a major draw, imo.

Funny aside on Pauline Collins. A hundred years ago, we were the guests of friends at Shirley Valentine, the play, with Ms. Collins. Color me confounded, but hubby and I disliked it.

Deedee, that is quite understandable about the play. The movie was entertaining, good... not great. Transpose that story to the stage without the beautiful Greece location, I think it would lose much of its' impact. I read Roger Ebert's review of the stage version - he agrees with you and the hubs. In fact, he was not fan of the movie either. So your opinion is not confounding, just honest.

I wanted to let you know, if you haven't had a chance to see it because it lives on AppleTV, Prime is streaming the first season of "Slow Horses" for its' viewers. I heard a lot of hubbub about this series, so I was very interested to see it. I watched the entire first season, needed to FF in a few parts that were a bit too much, and can tell you that though I was interested enough in the story to see it to the end, I really didn't like it all that much.

I have heard soo much about Gary Oldman's performance - over hyped in my opinion. It is what it is, but it is nothing so outstanding that it couldn't be done by another solid actor. We are not talking Ian McShane in "Deadwood" status.

The actor I did like is Jack Lowden as River, who also is in "The Gold".  I am glad I was able to watch it, but not interested enough to want to continue watching with an Apple TV subscription. That all being said, you may love it as many people do. Some are saying it is the best show on TV.

Another series I have been watching, an old one, but new to me - it's on Britbox and Solar, Netflix Canada I read - "Waking the Dead". I am two complete stories in (I thought the second was better than the first) and it's pretty good. I am liking a younger Trevor Eve. I will continue on and see how long I last (there are nine seasons) as sometimes I go off a show after a season or two. Lately, I find I like something for a bit and then lose interest. We will see.

deedee713 wrote 3 months ago: 1

Thanks, Brit, I thought it was just me on the play.

Hoo boy, I'll say. Slow Horses* has been hyped everywhere. Methinks Apple has lots of money (no, really?) for promos. Thanks, I've been searching around for something to watch. Waking the Dead, I think I've seen it, but who knows.

Hah, I go off a show midway into the first episode. Happy to be here, where I'm reminded to have more patience and give it, e.g., Karen Pirie, another go!

*darn, just checked. Bezos wants me to pay more to go ad free for Slow Horses

solar wrote 3 months ago: 1

Looking for  Waking  the  Dead  on  Netflix   Brit ..  haven't found it  yet ..  will  keep  looking .  Currently  watching  Mr. Mercedes   ( Netflix )  not recommending  it ,  kinda weird  actually .  Only thing holding my interest  is this retired cop trying to catch this really , really smart  psycho killer .

dee   ....   don't  give   Bezos  any  more   money .  lol

BritMystery wrote 2 months ago: 1

Yea, Deedee you now have to pay extra to watch Prime without ads. I won't pay the additional, I watch more Britbox than I do Prime and I can live with the ads when I do. You might even find the ads a welcomed break when things get a bit too intense while watching the show.

Solar, this is what I got for an answer when I looked it up. Whether this is actually correct - or not, I have no way of knowing as I can't access the inventory of shows from the States.

"Yes, the British crime drama series Waking the Dead is available to stream on Netflix Canada. The show follows a cold-case unit that uses forensic science and psychological profiling to solve murders.

Series Overview: The series is about a Metropolitan Police Service cold-case unit led by Detective Superintendent Peter Boyd.

Content: The unit investigates old, unsolved murder cases, often using modern technology and profiling techniques to find new leads.

Quite right, solar. I hope he's altruistic, with what he's made over his lifetime.

Thanks, Brit. I decided to watch Slow Horses, and you are quite right. Oldman was only pedestrian in the role. But Lowden is the standout. He was in The Gold? Good grief, I'm not registering the faces of new actors. I can still pick out Sam Elliot's face from a view from space, however.

Nonetheless, it's a very well done series, and brutal enough that I've read ahead to the end of each episode. Interestingly, I've watched two episodes and no adverts. I've probably gone and done it, and jinxed myself.
