British TV/General Discussion

Finally  got this  site  working  properly  again .  The last  week to 10  days it was a little  wonky  ( very slow and  freeze )  then  the last couple of  days  couldn't  access it at  all  .  Was  getting  a little   worried.  Today  it's  up  and  working  great .

Glad you mentioned this Solar, I've also been getting a lot of freezing on the site as well. I thought it was my phone and have been updating it and cleaning out anything that may have been slowing it down. It was taking forever to write my comment(s) as I had to wait for my phone to unfreeze numerous times. Seems to be working much better today.

Did you see that we have a new detective series coming to Masterpiece called "Winter"? Filming is starting in early 2026, so I guess we will see it aired sometime in 2027. Encouraging.

solar wrote 2 months ago: 1

Yeah  ,  Workin' good now  Brit  .  Started to get worried  for a time there.  Almost  sent off an  E - Mail  to ya .   Looked to find something on    ' Winter  '  but didn't have much  luck .  All I found  was  an  Australian  2015   production of  Winter  with the chief  cop being   Eve  Winter .   I don't think this has anything to do with Masterpiece's  production . Something to look forward to in  2027 .

solar wrote 2 months ago: 1

Ahhh    Brit  ...    you  found  something  on it.  Looks like it's gonna be a good  'un .  Can't wait ...   wanna  see it  now .  lol

'  the Courts ruled that NPR's funding has to be reinstated.  '      Good news  on the home front.   Hopefully  PBS  will still  bring us  ALL  the  shows  we love  to  see and hopefully add  a few  more.  lol

deedee713 wrote 2 months ago: 1

Also, of importance... the Courts ruled that NPR's funding has to be reinstated.

Very good news. Hopefully the courts stick to this decision. Winter looks to be a good show.

Hi Everyone,

I did some further digging and the funding that was reinstated ($36M) was for satellite infrastructure which will help maintain and provide direct support to public radio stations, which is a good thing, but unfortunately, will not help with operational funding for local TV stations. We are still in a pickle with that I am afraid to say.

I am sorry that I misunderstood the situation and gave you false hope. I know here in NJ we lost the majority of our State funding (75% reduction from $1M to $250,000) and this, coupled with the Federal funding rescissions for PBS stations, caused NJPBS to announce it would cease operations by June of 2026. I think they are waiting for someone to step up with private financing. Obviously, PBS Masterpiece programming will continue - we have a new detective series coming in 2026 - but, I may only be able to access it with streaming if there is no TV station outlet available.

NJPBS to announce it would cease operations by June of 2026.

How perfectly, terribly, horribly, disgustingly awful.

I hope Passport steps up its PBS playbook.

BritMystery wrote a month ago: 1

Yes Deedee, it is not good. NJPBS is a great channel for British TV content, not to exclude all the other local information, and of course the nightly news, for the State. If they can't figure out a way to save it financially it will be a great loss.

I have to tell you what I am rewatching! Do you remember the "War of the Worlds" miniseries we watched back in 2020 with the black dog-like robots? Well, Prime TV is airing it this month as part of their Sample for Free inventory (it is part of the MGM streaming service which I don't subscribe to).

I thought about it for a bit and finally decided to rewatch it because I remember how intense and scary it was the first time around and figured since I already had been through it once, this watch might allow me to pick up on the detail I most likely missed the first go around.

I just finished E4, and it is still intense and scary, but not on the same level as before, so yes I can key in to more of the characters and storyline. The part that has really stood out to me (up to now) - half way thru - is that I don't like any of the characters much, as a whole none are drawing me in except for one absolute shining star, the one person who makes you believe in humanity again... the young male porter in the hospital who singlehandedly kept the babies in nursery alive with the around the clock care they needed. It is heroic beyond words. That is the character that will remain with me long after this rewatch. The generosity and compassion of spirit no one else has shown. If memory serves me, it is the saving grace of the story.

I don't exactly remember what comes next because the big hospital scene with the robots comes in E5, but I do remember the babies are kept safe.

Thanks, Brit, I'll have to look for it. I'd like to see it again with detachment, the noise those dogs made still give the heebie jeebies!

Dee, can you believe it has been five years since we watched this? I am in disbelief. Where did all the time go? I can remember when we were discussing it, that seems like only a few years ago. Boy, time is rolling by - and a bit too fast.

I was wrong about the babies, ultimately the aliens take them. They are taking any baby, or unborn child, they can find. I forgot all about this. I am not up to the part where we find out why they are doing this. Gotta say, the story does draw you in.

Did  y'all  have a  white  Christmas  ??  ..  had a green  Christmas  here .  Got some snow  last evening , about  5  Cm.  ,  so  today it's  white  ,  a  day  late .  lol    Been  watching   S5  Eps. of   '  All  Creatures  '   ...   gettin'  ready for NEW  S6  on   Jan.  11 .  on  PBS .

Hi solar - about 4" on Saturday and the real 'he who must be obeyed', i.e., the dog, hates it. Raises his paw for me to clean off the salt, does the same for the snow, but he's worth it.

Yes, looks to be some good shows upcoming. Right now, reveling yet again in Seaside Hotel on PBS Passport.

Brit, was your holiday decorating once again worthy of House Beautiful?

Hi  dee  ....   a lot of rain here  ,  every day with rain in winter  means  1 day without snow .   Dogs are so funny and different .  Your dog  hates the snow  where as the dog next  door just  loves  it.  He's  black so he can't  hide.  He races head first into a snow bank  so he can  plunge his head  straight in.  Then can't stop rollin' around in it .  Hates to be brought in the house when he could be havin' more  fun .  lol

Good to hear from  ya   sheerwater ...    Can't read the Roy Clarke  article  but the one on Idris Elba was most interesting . A Knight hood for services to young  people .  He started the initiative     '  Don't  Stop Your  Future  '   what  a  worthy  endeavour .  Well  done  that  man .  A final  note  ,  looks to be quite  tall  standing  next to the King.

Happy New Year Everyone! 🎉🥳

Solar, your favorite series returning which brings you great comfort and joy - what is better than that heading in to the winter months! I am in the same universe as you because I just found out that the new season of "Shetland" is dropping on Britbox in a few days. I've been watching a few things I found that having been hanging out on Prime for awhile - in the middle of one, finished the other. Nothing I would recommend, but they are keeping me entertained with something different and that is fine for right now. I am so looking forward to the new season of "Shetland".

BTW, we already have had snow by me. That is a rarity, we haven't seen snow this early in the season in years. It's gone now as we have had a few warmer days since, but we have had some of the worst winds I have seen at this time of year. The front of my house is in its' own little wind tunnel, so when the wind gets bad I am living in a frigid "tropical" storm. Every tree swaying (and I have some big ones in my front lawn) - I have learned to keep the Christmas decorations to a minimum these last few years - use to go all out and we would find ourselves continually having to put things back up. At some point, you throw up your hands. Wreaths on the windows and door with big red bows, a few safely placed seasonal items, some lights and we called it a day.

Speaking of decorations, we are having a quiet Christmas this year Deedee, I did decorate, but nothing over the top. It looks festive and warm, put out the decorations that mean the most to me and have the house at night aglow with candles (white sparkly luminara pinecone candles throughout the front of the house amidst the greenery and Christmas finery - entrance, living room and dining room). My fav room is the kitchen. I (and the Hubs) love how it looks at Christmas with all my seasonal tidbits.

Buddy is my kind of guy, knows enough to get himself cleaned up when he walks back thru the door. They (our pet children) are so smart... I can picture him lifting his paw to get all the wet snow/salt off. 😊

Sheerwater, so happy to hear Roy Clarke (as well as Idris Elba) have been so honoured. Much deserved. Isn't Mr. Clarke still involved in my fav, "Still Open All Hours"? I am going to go check.... yes, he is! Writing the series and the man was in his eighties at the time. Brilliant!

Happy New Year one and all!

solar, I find the writing better on ACG&S of late. Don't know if it's them....or me. (o:

Brit, I'm sure anything you have done to your house is perfect. You are correct on The Master, he knows I will jump to his aid. Reminds me of the line on Seinfeld, when he talked about aliens coming to earth and seeing humans tending to their dog's business on the street. He was sure they would ask: "who's in charge here"?

Is Shetland still worth a watch? I gave up when Henshall left. Perhaps I should give the upcoming series a try.
