British TV/General Discussion

Deedee, you should definitely give it a go. Ruth and Tosh work as a team, which I think you will like. The addition of Ashley Jensen brought life back to the series. Jimmy P. had his day, and it was an excellent run...loved him, but at the end he was disillusioned and done with the role, both as a character and an actor it seemed. Even though he moved on the quality of the series did not falter. Still one of the best.

Hi  dee  ....   a lot of rain here  ,  every day with rain in winter  means  1 day without snow .   Dogs are so funny and different .  Your dog  hates the snow  where as the dog next  door just  loves  it.  He's  black so he can't  hide.  He races head first into a snow bank  so he can  plunge his head  straight in.  Then can't stop rollin' around in it .  Hates to be brought in the house when he could be havin' more  fun .  lol

Good to hear from  ya   sheerwater ...    Can't read the Roy Clarke  article  but the one on Idris Elba was most interesting . A Knight hood for services to young  people .  He started the initiative     '  Don't  Stop Your  Future  '   what  a  worthy  endeavour .  Well  done  that  man .  A final  note  ,  looks to be quite  tall  standing  next to the King.

Success  sheerwater   .......    Roy Clarke  , what an extraordinary  man .   Just read  the long  list of  his accomplishments  and at 95 he makes me feel like a  kid.  lol    Knighthood  well  deserved .    By  viewing a  European  Weather  Report  I see  you  people in the  U.K.  are getting  quite a  snow  blast .

I was able to see that link as well. Thanks, Sheerwater. Solar, he certainly does give us hope with all that he has a accomplished in his eighties and nighties!

Deedee, in Prime's "Sample This Month" they have included the Danish version of "The Killing" which streams on MHz - both the dubbed and subtitled version. I remember a lot of buzz about this series when it first aired, but never saw it.

Decided to give it a go even though I don't watch much Nordic Noir these days as they are generally a tough watch. I don't think I would make it through the Swedish "Wallender", one of my favorites of my MHz days, if I first started to watch that today.

Well, it is graphic and disturbing - the story though is captivating. It reminds me a little of "Broadchurch" as it focuses on how the family grapples with the unthinkable assault and death of their daughter through the investigation. This series has twenty episodes, so there is a lot of depth to the story, again much like "Broadchurch".

I am not recommending it for you because it is so graphic (which you would expect from a Danish noir production). I am surprised that I am getting through it myself. Yet, it is complex, captivating as I said, and has a lot of red herrings - it pulls me in.

Well, Sir David Attenborough presented an hour long program, Wild London on New Year's day which he filmed last summer at the age of 99! He turns 100 in May this year.

Thanks, Brit. I need a good long series right now. The first episode of Shetland is on Britbox, but they drop the rest, even though they were released, at their whim.

I found Blue Lights on Britbox also, another decent police procedural.

Question: does The Killing have any animal killing? No off camera or CGI for the Danes.

Does anyone here have Acorn TV? I'm curious whether the company subscription has a full roster of shows available. Acorn through Prime has a total of 10 series available.

Another  article  that  makes me feel  young  sheerwater .  Love seeing those pics of  Sir  David  at  99  with  the tiny  animals.   Have  a large pine tree  in  my  backyard  and at the base of it  , a birdbath .   I watch the squirrels  fill it up  with   pinecones  , till it is overflowing .  Such funny little  tykes , don't know why they  do  that .  lol

dee  ...    watched  a couple  of   Shetland  I had in  PVR .  Old  ones  from   2016  with  Henshall .  Love the scenery ,  such a baron  almost haunting  landscape  , it  draws me  in.

solar, I think the squirrels create a smorgasbord for all their neighbors. His Highness loves chasing them - me on the leash of course - up a tree, and when he's satisfied he hasn't yet learned to climb trees, we can leave.

I too loved the old Shetland, until they made him schmoopy. At least Morse (dear Thaw) was never made schmoopy, much to my satisfaction.

As Brit said, the new Shetland appears to be watchable, thank you. Meanwhile, the third season of Blue Lights was excellent.

Solar and Sheerwater, I was getting a lot of content on my FB feed regarding Sir David Attenborough over the last several months or so. I don't actually know where it was coming from, it may have been the BBC page I follow or a combination of that and a few others, but he was popping up pretty regularly. The man amazes me.

I have two squirrels that hang out in the tree next to my patio on the berm there (I think they might have a nest in that tree) and in the large trees in my front lawn, so they are always running through my garden and patio. I get concerned in the winter about them finding food, so I do put out nuts which they take and hide in their nest and today I cut up an apple and left it under the patio table (which is covered). They know to go there and look for snacks. I don't put out food regularly, I don't want them to become dependent, which is not good for them, but when it's cold they need the extra help.

Haven't started the new season of "Shetland" as yet, I will wait until all the episodes drop.

Deedee, no, no animals are killed in "The Killing" - you are safe in that regard. When it comes to Danish productions you are right to ask. Their cultural sensibilities regarding animals doesn't align with ours. Please, what they have done with their zoo animals alone. 🙄😓

Thanks for the heads-up on "Blue Lights". I am going to try it after I finish "The Killing".

Solar, I thought you would enjoy this, came up on my FB feed today.

Very good opening episode to the season. Took me a minute to adjust to the fact that so many years had gone by, but glad they put the war behind them and the stories moving forward will focus on village life and healing from the aftermath.

Agree, Brit. Nicely done. Somebody, Prime I think, teased Slow Horses, well done imo, and there was Samuel West. Took me a bit to recognize him.

What is the consensus on Bookish?

I tried A Confession on Britbox, too hard a watch even for me. Headed to Manhunt, on Acorn, a nice change.

Deedee, yes, I am glad we got to see the first season of "Slow Horses" with Prime a month or so ago. I was not interested enough to continue on with an Apple TV subscription to watch beyond that, but I can understand you wanting to see more! That show is right up your alley.

I had to go back and watch a video on The Tube to refresh myself re: Samuel West as Peter Judd. I like Samuel W. in any role he plays - he definitely is his parents' son - he is an excellent actor.

I haven't seen "Bookish". I am not a big Mark Gatiss fan, so although it is getting a lot of hype, I plan on skipping that.

I have toyed with watching "A Confession"... several times, but for some reason I always think no, and move on. I never actually stopped to try it. Given your reaction, I made the right choice.

I watched "Manhunt" back when I had an Acorn TV subscription. I really enjoyed it, it was well done. That is something I would certainly rewatch.

Samuel West (thank you Wikipedia) the son of Prunella Scales and Timothy West?! Thanks for making me look, Brit.

And the grandson of an actor, Lockwood West. It's in the blood!

You've made good choices, Brit. I had to fast-forward past the scenes with two supporting so-called actors in Bookish.

Thanks  for the clip   Brit  ...   Have watched  this  Ep.  twice  now  ,  will probably  watch it again  either today or tomorrow.  This Ep.  primarily  brought  Mrs. Hall  back into the series .  Don't know what's going on  between her and  Siegfried  ,  they certainly  have an  interesting  dynamic.  He called her by her first name in one scene  so I guess that's a start of something .   lol   All  set for   Ep. 2  this  coming   Sunday .

dee  .....    Timothy  West  was the principal  caregiver  to his wife Prunella  Scales  through  her battle with dementia    ...   she outlived him by a year.

Thanks, solar. Shame they're both gone.

Samuel West lost both his parents within a year as you say, Solar. I was thinking of that as I was watching him in "All Creatures". That is very hard, I am sure he is still coping with the grief. I feel for him.
