Diffenret enttities for the same character on different shows

We sure know our character page might need some more fine tuning, but it has been set to low prio for now as David is already busy with his normal job and coding for TVmaze (high prio's), however we decided to stick to one character page for them as they are basically the same person. We would only consider adding a second character with the same actor when it is certain he plays a complete different character too, which has nothing to do with that other person for instance.

I was thinking about separating the link between character and person altogether, so for example, all of the flash series that took place over the years would share the same character. I really don't understand what is there to gain from configuring the same character duplicated for each show, in fact it sounds like more work to me.

Well, for starters, you'd have to choose which image is the "prime" image for the character. Choosing John Wesley Shipp of the 90s Flash would mean that he'd show up in every show that had the Flash: the current CW series, the Justice League TV pilot, the animated Justice League series, Challenge of the Superfriends, etc.

Alternately, if you chose Grant Gustin, you'd see him as the primary character on all of the above.

I'd agree that the same character--played by the same actor--should be shared across shows set in the same "universe." Which is the example given. But that's a lot rarer than just the same character. There are quite a few versions of Batman, Superman, Sherlock Holmes, etc. and their supporting casts played by different actors and sometimes with totally different concepts. Does Jim Gordon on Gotham become the older Jim Gordon on the 60s Batman? Presumably they are different characters with different backgrounds and biographies. But if you treat them as a single Jim Gordon... ugh.

This question has come up before, but perhaps it was in a different forum.

Sharing a single character entry between multiple shows will never happen, for both logical and technical reasons. For example while adding a cast entry, searching for a specific character in the entire database (instead of only within that show) would be near impossible.

However, we do plan to support linking characters from separate shows together, to quickly indicate relationships between them.

I'm not sure why you say it would be technically impossible but OK. I'll wait for character linking then. Thanks!

Of course everything is possible; but it's impossible within our current architecture ;-)

The cast to character relationships between Full House (1987) and Fuller House (2016) are exactly the same. They've just aged a bit.
