Ratings Roundup Week of April 9, 2017

Another relatively quiet ratings week, lots of reruns last week as networks stretch schedules into May sweeps.

CBS had another strong week that started with a gift of overrun from The Masters Tournament. That's an extra 15 million people The Eye counted in its prime time numbers for the week. Ransom quietly ended with a whimper while the rebooted MacGyver also wrapped its season with OK ratings. There are rumors The Odd Couple was also quietly canceled last week, rumors fueled by tweets by Matthew Perry, so more than likely true.

Trial & Error had a bit of a Jekyl and Hyde week for NBC as its Tuesday episodes fared well, but the Thursday outing sank. The Blacklist: Redemption closed its eight episode foray into spinoff land with its usual numbers. The good news, the show was consistent in its ratings, the less good news, those numbers were consistently low. Taken also slipped a bit, and it can't afford to slip any lower if it hopes to get good renewal news in a couple of weeks.

ABC had several shows fall into the middling ratings area last week as five of its scripted dramas rated a 0.7 or lower. American Crime was the lowest rated program overall for the network, and is sure to be canceled. ABC's Easter staple of The Ten Commandments had a respectable outing and Grey's Anatomy took the top spot for the network.

Spring is a rough time for ratings anyway, but FOX was hit hard last week as Brooklyn Nine-Nine returned much lower than normal, and even Prison Break took a hit from its opening episode the week before. You the Jury sank to embarrassingly low numbers last week; it has six episodes left, FOX execs may or may not survive the wait. Empire continued its domination for the network, however fans of APB and Rosewood should enjoy what remains as it's unlikely either program will be renewed.

TheCW ran a lot of reruns last week and the good news at least is the programs with new episodes did outperform the reruns. (Well except for Reign which is already canceled). Supernatural led the way for the network, holding at its usual weekly numbers with The Originals right behind it. iZombie dropped a tenth and Riverdale remained at its usual low.

Networks will start previewing pilots and announcing fall schedules in just a few more weeks. One question heading into May will be the on-going negotiations with the Writer's Guild of America (WGA) and the potential for another writer's strike. So far both sides are still coming to the table however the current contract expires May 1.
