Ratings Roundup for the Week of March 29, 2020

CBS had a busy week last week with one big finale and two premieres. Hawaii Five-0 ended its ten-year run on another high. Ratings were even, but a million more viewers tuned in for the last episode over the previous week. Man with a Plan returned for its fourth season, down from its premiere last year, but about even with where it ended. The new Pauley Perette series, Broke, premiered last week with good numbers. Time will tell if it can hold its audience. Young Sheldon was back last week up two tenths from its last new episode in March. Tommy returned after a couple of weeks off, up a tenth.

The CW announced the farewell tour for Supernatural would continue next season. Even though only two episodes were left to film, the network has decided to hold back the remaining seven episodes for next season as opposed to trying to run the last episodes as a special. A new season of Whose Line Is It, Anyway, premiered last week, taking the top spot for a week of mostly repeats. Roswell, New Mexico shed a ratings tenth and two hundred thousand viewers. Charmed lost a rating tenth, but held its viewer numbers. Dynasty is inching ever closer to a 0.0 rating, once again barely able to find three hundred thousand viewers.

Which TV Shows Have Been Renewed, Which Have Been Canceled and Which Are We Waiting to Hear About?

Since mid-March, the coronavirus pandemic has upended every aspect of life in the United States, causing stay-at-home mandates in most states in an attempt to contain the spread of COVID-19.

As a consequence, the entertainment industry — a multi-billion-dollar global business — has come to a grinding halt, with every television show and movie indefinitely shut down, putting most of the tens of thousands of people employed by those productions out of work. The shutterings hit the broadcast networks — Fox, NBC, CBS, ABC, and The CW — toward the end of the traditional TV season, so some shows had already completed production before the summer hiatus. Others — such as ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy,” which had shot 21 episodes of its 25-episode order — simply had to adjust accordingly, concluding its season early on April 9.

I first saw an article about it in the news/article section here, late last week about it's cancellation. While both Deputy and Prodigal Son are/were good shows, personally I liked Prodigal Son a bit more. Maybe because there's a touch of dark humor to the seriousness to the crime drama that Deputy didn't seem to have.

Bring on Deputy Season 2! How else are they going to fill all the programming holes? Not more re-runs of reality-show fare :(

A Puzzle Without All the Pieces: Broadcast Networks Scramble to Program an Uncertain Future

With no signs of when production can resume amid the global coronavirus crisis, the Big Four are considering everything — even streaming fare — as they address summer schedules filled with holes. And fall may pose an even bigger problem.

I hadn't seen anything on the Deputy cancellation. With the pilot season basically a wash, I'm surprised. That tells me that FOX plans to fill with more "reality" over scripted shows. If it is cancelled, than yes, Prodigal Son is a safe bet for renewal.

It was a good finale for Five-0, if a bit obvious they were waffling on whether or not to cancel. I think they had every intention of renewing if Scott re-upped his contract. Since he chose to bow out as well, the production decided to end rather than try to continue.

While it was sad to see Hawaii Five-0 say "Aloha," it was a nice finale. The Good Doctor had a nice finale as well, even though it was sad having to say goodbye to one of the characters. I didn't watch Broke, buy my mom did, she liked it and will probably continue to tune in. I haven't had a chance to watch Prodigal Son yet, since I've read that Deputy got cancelled, there should be a good possibility that it (Prodigal Son) should get a second season, right? The other shows I watch are still chugging along.
