Ratings Roundup for the Week of March 9, 2025

ABC premiered the latest season of American Idol last week, down from where it ended its last season. Shifting Gears picked up one hundred thousand viewers. Doctor Odyssey lost four hundred thousand viewers. Grey's Anatomy slid again last week, losing another three hundred thousand viewers. The show might squeak a "final season" renewal, but it also wouldn't be a surprise if the network announced the show was cancelled. The Rookie picked up one hundred thousand viewers after a week off. Will Trent lost two hundred thousand viewers but is in no danger. 9-1-1 lost four hundred thousand viewers but remained the top-rated drama for the network. It should be renewed.

CBS refrained from dropping any other bombshells last week. Most of the network's current programs know their fates. Of the ones remaining, Survivor is certain to be renewed. The Amazing Race will also likely be renewed. Watson picked up eight hundred thousand viewers last week, but it may be a case of too little too late. The Equaliser also wallowed at the low end of the ratings chart most of the season. While it picked up almost a million viewers over the previous week, its chances of renewal are slim. Poppa's House has been a steady, middle-of-the-pack ratings performer, it could be renewed assuming the network doesn't have a lot of new comedies currently in the pipeline.

NBC continued to see good results from The Americas last week. The latest episode picked up three hundred thousand viewers. The same cannot be said for the network's stable of freshman dramas. The Hunting Party did pick up two hundred thousand viewers. Suits: LA gained a few tens of thousands of new viewers over the previous week. Grosse Point Garden Society was even. Of the three, The Hunting Party has the best odds of renewal, but those are some long odds. The network is going to have some tough decisions to make. Six of their current dramas, the three newbies, plus Found, The Irrational, and the other freshman series, Brilliant Minds, all failed to garner much audience enthusiasm. A few of them may be renewed if only to stop the hemorrhaging in the schedule, the question would be, which ones would be the least expensive risk to take? Of the six, The Irrational and Brilliant Minds are produced outside of the NBC/Universal ecosystem, making them the lower-hanging fruit for cancellation. Expect one or both to join Grosse Point Garden Society on the chopping block.

FOX wrapped Animal Control and Going Dutch last week. Neither show managed to pull a million viewers for their finales, and both are likely done. The Sunday animation block had another rough week. Family Guy, Grimsburg, and The Great North were even with the previous week's lows. Krapopolis lost another two hundred thousand viewers.

CW trundled along for another week. Police 24/7 picked up a few thousand viewers. Crime Nation lost a few thousand. All American and Good Cop/Bad Cop were both up in viewers. The two true crime shows will probably be renewed. Penn & Teller: Fool Us will also likely be renewed. Expect cancellation notices for both of the scripted shows.

Technically, Good Cop/Bad Cop could be considered an import. It's produced by an American and an Australian production company and distributed by ITV in the UK. If the CW were to drop the show, I'm not sure who would be willing to pick it up.

As for The Irrational, it already has two strikes against it, low ratings, and it's not produced in-house. With that said, NBC might be willing to keep it simply because so many of its freshman shows bombed out this season. Its future may depend more on what the network has in the pipeline for next season. If there is a bright side, NBC is trending toward lower episode counts for scripted shows. They are doing a split season, basically. Running one set of shows in the fall and a second in the spring. That does lower production costs, but it means they have to back more shows than, say, CBS or ABC. So there is hope. Not a lot, I'll grant, but maybe a little.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that The Irrational will get renewed. Same with Good Cop/Bad Cop.

Be nice if another network picked up Good Cop/Bad Cop.
