Ratings Roundup for the Week of March 23, 2025

CBS surprised many last week, announcing that Watson was renewed for a second season. The Morris Chestnut-led series has not lit up the ratings charts this season, but the network execs must have seen something they liked. This news does not bode well for fans of The Equaliser. That series is in its fifth season, making it an expensive proposition to renew. Losing half a million viewers last week likely did not help its chances. NCIS: Origins returned after more than a month off, even with its last viewer numbers. Poppa's House was up two hundred thousand viewers after a couple of weeks off.

ABC wrapped the latest season of The Bachelor last week. The series picked up seven hundred thousand viewers for its finale. The Conners premiered its final season last week, up from where it ended last May. Grey's Anatomy picked up a few tens of thousands of viewers. Will Trent and The Rookie were each up half a million viewers. Both should be renewed. 9-1-1 was up three hundred thousand viewers and should be an easy renewal. Doctor Odyssey was down one hundred thousand viewers.

NBC wrapped The Irrational last week. The series picked up half a million viewers for its finale, but that may be too little too late. Deal No Deal Island's finale was up four hundred thousand viewers. The Americas was down two hundred thousand viewers. Grosse Point Garden Society didn't even pull a million viewers last week. It lost another three hundred thousand viewers and is just playing out the side at this point. The series has a thirteen-episode order. Do not be surprised if the network yanks it. Suits LA lost another two hundred thousand viewers. Its chances for renewal are nil. The Hunting Party was down seven hundred thousand viewers. It's likely done as well.

FOX premiered two more scripted dramas last week. The Cleaning Lady opened its fourth season even with where it ended in May. Alert: Missing Persons Unit was up with its third season premiere compared to where it ended last season. The good news for the Sunday animation block was that their ratings were even with the previous week. The bad news was only one: Family Guy managed to pull more than half a million viewers. A weak lead-in of competition show repeats didn't help matters. Rescue: HI Surf was down four hundred thousand viewers after a week off.

CW chugged along for another week. Good Cop/Bad Cop jumped up in ratings numbers, though its viewer numbers remained the same. Crime Nation wrapped its second season, up almost ten thousand viewers. It and Police 24/7 are cheap to produce and will likely be renewed. The odds that All American will be renewed are slim. While the show does well by CW standards, scripted content is expensive. The show is also in its seventh season, which means contract renewals for cast are coming up, adding another layer of expense.

Upfronts are the week of May 11. Networks have already made their decisions about next season, even if they haven't announced them yet. Will your favorite shows be back again in the fall?

Linear networks look at something called the C3 (commercial three day) ratings. Remember, networks care about the advertising. The show is just the carrot to get you to watch the ads. Advertisers want to know people are watching the ads, and if they aren't, then those advertisers will pull their funding. The C3s measure how often a show is viewed in the first three days it is available. The thinking is that this is the optimal time when people will watch the ads and not use other means, such as recording and fast forwarding, to skip them.

Civilians like us never get to see those numbers. However, the Final Overnights (which are the numbers I report) are a pretty close analogue.

PR departments love to put out press releases of how well a show does in its 7-day, 30-day, or streaming numbers, but the reality is, as far as decision-making goes, network execs only look at those C3s.

Oh! Thank you very much for all this information, I learned something today.

Not in any real way. They juggle back and forth between a few thousand viewers either way. Not enough to really make a difference. Neither has managed to pull even half a million viewers in the last few weeks. With FOX bringing back American Dad, I expect the Sunday lineup to be The Simpsons, Bob's Burgers, American Dad, and Family Guy

Do they only take the views on Fox or they add what they make on Disney+ as well?

Didn't The Great North still did best than Grimsburg? They might have suffered from the lack of promo for them.

Considering how low its ratings have been and the fact that The Great North and Grimsburg were conspicuously absent from any renewal mention with the rest of the Sunday animated shows, I have the sneaking suspicion that neither of them will be back next season.

With how bad the ratings seem for Grosse Pointe Gardening and Suits LA, could that be good news for The Irrational possibly getting renewed?

Maybe? NBC haemorrhaged ratings this season with all of its freshman shows. That may work to the benefit of shows like The Irrational and Found simply because there was nothing better to replace them. The factor working against The Irrational is that it is not produced by NBC. That makes it more expensive than, say, Found, which is produced in part by Universal.

A lot will depend on how many hour-long scripted shows the network has in the pipe for next season. If they have a lot, the network could cancel the four freshman shows, and The Irrational, and Found and just start over. Axing six dramas, though, is pretty extreme. My guess is Grosse Point and Suits LA are cancelled. That leaves The Irrational, Found, Brilliant Minds, and The Hunting Party as shows that can go either way.

There is also streaming in the mix now. The execs could decide to move a couple of those shows over to Peacock.
