Born in Princeton, New Jersey, Michael Showalter was a founding member of The State, a sketch comedy group, while an undergrad at New York University. He maintained close ties with his friends after transferring and graduating from Brown University, and was part of the gang's big break in 1992, creating video shorts for You Wrote It, You Watch It on MTV.
