Born in Brooklyn, New York Michael Jai White is a black belt in seven different karate styles, and had began teaching Karate by age 14 at the local YMCA. Before acting, his career was as a junior high school teacher, working with troubled children in grades five through seven. Auditioning and earning small roles, he made the hard decision to leave teaching and pursue an acting career. He relocated to Los Angeles and had his first major starring role in the 1995 HBO film Tyson.
