"The description is from an official source"

Sometimes when I'm copying and pasting descriptions, I forget to tick the checkbox next to "The description is from an official source." Then when I go back and click Edit, and tick the box, an error message is displayed that says,

Please fix the following errors:

Cannot change this property as the text was unchanged

This seems to be a bug, david needs to look into this :)

It's not really a bug, just (probablky) an oversight in programming. The error message is factually accurate, there was no changes to the text.

Presumably yes, the system should allow the edit. But maybe David didn't want it to for some reason.

This is expected behavior at least.

For some reason we had a lot of cases of people coming in and changing the "official source" checkbox for an episode without changing anything else, so we added this safeguard.

Not sure what to do with this. :)

Were they changing it to turn it off, or turn it on? (when there were no changes to the summary)

I could see why you wouldn't want people to turn it off without a summary change. But presumably you want people to turn it on if it needs to be turned on. Whether it's capable of that kind of either/or, I don't know.

I'm wondering why we even have the box. Official descriptions can be edited just like any other, so does it matter really?

That's what I wonder. Completely remove it or give us an option to credit our sources in a proper way.

I don't think that's a bug, but it's intended.

But it's indeed a bit anoying if you just forgot to tick it... :/

What kind of edits are you talking about?

If you mean a single typo, then they're still the official descriptions.

If you're changing several words, then it's no longer the official description and you'd need to unmark that indicator.

I'd imagine it's there as an acknowledgement of copyright. However, I'm not sure that it serves that purpose, since it's not visible on the episode page. You only see it if you click on the Edit button.

It's more a question of what point does it serve. Official descriptions aren't locked or in any way special in terms of how they are treated. They can be edited anywhere from fixing a typo to completely rewriting them with something else. So what's the point of even having the box at all.

Gadfly wrote 9 years ago: 1

As I said, the box presumably serves as a credit notice of sorts, albeit a not-very-visible one. Even copying official press releases requires that you credit the company you're getting it from.

At least, that's how American copyright law works.

wmulder wrote 9 years ago: 1

If you copy/paste the entire description and add the checkmark, it will work. :)

The checkbox is there to keep our records straight and to make sure official summaries can be quickly identified if we have to. It's likely that we'll add a better indicator for it in the future as well. :)
