Quick question about episode numbering

Nickelodeon's School of Rock has wacky episode numbering on nick.com. For instance the pilot episode is listed as Season 1, Episode 12 and Season 1 Episode 1 is missing all together. I suspect this is a mistake on Nickelodeon's web site and that these numbers are production numbers not episode numbers. Indeed this is episode 112 production wise.

Literally every other source shows School of Rock episode numbers that match the order of their chronological airdates, not the production numbers. This is a lot more intuitive. My question is when do we use the primary source's episode numbering and when do we use third party episode numbering? In this case I agree that third party episode numbering is best, but sometimes it seems better to use the original episode numbering such as the case with Netflix original series where most people watch it on the web site. Or when the episode originally aired in the wrong order.

Episode numbering is based first and foremost off of airdates (this is why Firefly for example lists the episodes in the "wrong" order)

From the FAQ:
The unique sequence number of the episode within its season. This should always reflect the order in which episodes were originally premiered. The first non-special episode in a season should always be numbered "1"; specials don't have an episode number.

As far as I'm aware, TVMaze always does it by airdate rather than anything else.

"The unique sequence number of the episode within its season. This should always reflect the order in which episodes were originally premiered. "

Regarding the mismatch, this will cover it anyway:

"The first non-special episode in a season should always be numbered "1"

Thanks. I have read the FAQ before, and gone back to glean it again, but these things are sometimes easy to miss. Thanks again.

Are there ever exceptions? I guess not. That seems pretty straight forward.

Only someone higher up could confirm if there's ever exceptions; if there is, they're not listed.

There is a Pending feature to allow other ordering (such as DVDs for situations like Firefly) if you want to vote for it you can do so here: Alternate Episode Numbering

I don't think there are - or will be - any exceptions to this part of the policy.
