status

billzant wrote 9 years ago: 1

I have just started TVMAZE after TVRAGE issues - recommendation from a Reddit thread.I now prefer TVMAZE.

On the shows page for a particular show you have Status and often it reads "running". It would be nice to know whether a series has finished. The term "running" could mean "during the series" or "between series". The date of the last show is visible but if Status could show whether it was "returning" that would be something I would like.

Checking the Episodes list helps. If series 1 has ended and it is known there is a series 2, S02 could be shown empty.

I heard a phrase the other day "binge watching". I am sad like that, and prefer watching a whole series to conclusion. What I have asked above would help with that.

Welcome here!

In terms of show status, our system doesn't make a difference between "running" and "returning". This because the exact difference between these two is unclear: when exactly would a show no longer be "running" but "returning"? If there's a 1-week break? If there's a 3-week holiday break? If there's a 2-month midseason break?

But I've heard more people asking whether we can make this state more clear. We'll look at this; we can probably use a combination of the season's "episode order" property and the previous & next episode data to calculate an indication.

Thanks for replying, David. Knowing if there was a significant gap and knowing when the series is returning would both help me. Thanks again.

How about:

New
Renewed
Cancelled

?

Renewed is basically the same as 'returning' and David explained that already. I think new wouldn't be very useful to use as a new show indicates 'in Development', which indicates it is a new show about to start. The day it is airing, the status will turn to running. Ended or Cancelled is basically the same, isn't it? When you cancel a show, it is ended too.

Are you talking about a page, where you can see all cancelled, renewed and new shows ?

if so, we have that on the to-do list :)

The status of each show is always displayed on the main page of a show.

cheers
Juan

I think he meant about the status of the show whether it is running, in development, ended or to be determined :)

I use tags as follows:

- "Running" tagged as "On Air"

- Between seasons tagged as "On Break"

- Developed shows which will air in a month or so tagged as "Coming Soon"

Just some ideas to help out :)

I can't find this "to-do list", but it doesn't really sound like it's what I'm looking for anyway.

I'm a convert from TVrage, as well. I absolutely love this site, but the one feature of theirs that I really, really miss is a "renewed/cancelled" link on the homepage where when a show had been renewed or cancelled (or cancelled after 10 more episodes aired, etc) they would add it to the top of the list with the date they added it so we could just click that link and glance at any new entries at the top every couple/few weeks to see if any shows we personally cared about had a status update since the last time we'd checked.

That's something I would LOVE to see added :) .... But, in the meantime, could you direct me to the "to-do list" section, please?

Thanks,

Lisa127

Hi Lisa127

I think Juan is mentioning a list that David and Jan the admin have, for features they are going to implement on the site, not something we can see :)

yes exactly :) But I am also in favor for that renewed/cancelled list!

http://www.tvmaze.com/forums/6/pending-features is pretty much our public todo list :)

The most popular requests should all be on there, but we haven't had the time to wade through the forums and make sure everything that's requested is listed in there.

TVMaze already shows when a show is returning on a season level if that information has been added;

For example http://www.tvmaze.com/shows/541/prison-break - because the 5th season's premiere year has been set to 2016, the status on the main page shows: Running; returning 2016 as opposed to just Running.

I'd like to see Final Season added as a status between Running and Ended when that information is known (ie the upcoming season of Grimm)

That seems like a good idea to me.

It is incredibly rare for a program to advertise its last season, maybe one or two programs a season will actually give such information. I'm not sure how useful it wold be to have this one.

Jan wrote 9 years ago: 1

It's indeed not that common for a show to announce it's final season. A more common situation is Cancellation while running. Final Season would still not work for this criteria as there are shows that are cancelled and picked up again later on. (futurama, family dad, arrested development,...)

gazza911 wrote 9 years ago: 1

@Jan

Normally it would just be set to Ended and then later set back to Running, what would be the difference between changing it from Final Season if it was later picked up again?

It's not as rare as it used to be and in fact is becoming much more common for shows that have had a longer run. As well, it would still apply in cases such as Angel from Hell or Rush Hour when the shows get yanked but still have episodes in the can that still need to be burned off.
