I'm also not familiar with this particular one (dropped it after a few episodes).
We have under certain scenarios split it according to arcs where there's a clear distinction (e.g. all episode names have a prefix). However it doesn't appear like this is the case here.
As far as I can tell, whenever they're going to produce more, they announce a further 51 more episodes - split over four cours (10-14 episodes each) with each adapting a chapter from the manga.
The only difference is a new opening/ending, other than that it's just extending it.

From looking it up, it seems like it is a direct sequel which focuses on the son of the protagonist.

Funimation in the US divides it into seasons, so that's where the split comes form probably, but yeah it's a continuous show in Japan.

Crunchyroll streaming as one season, I know some sites divide season into arks or time periods (winter,spring, summer and fall). But I do not support this, all episodes should be in the same season until the new season was announced.
